Trainz/THANE a Game or a Simulation?

It is disturbing to see N3V employees referencing their Trainz product as a game. I view the current Trainz TS12 product as a simulation. The reason is - it is a very complex product that, in my humble opinion, would not appeal to people who are strongly aligned with "games". If the new product is referred to as a game, and marketed as a game, I would be very disturbed. I am sure some will claim that it will continue as a complex simulator and be marketed as a game. Unless they have hard information I am fearful about the value of the new product to the existing community of users.

If the product is "split" in a way that a simplified usage is possible (game mode), there is a possibility that development will be directed toward the most profitable market - games. The cost of enhancing and maintaining a game should be less than a simulator. The potential number of customers should be higher for a game than a simulation. A rationale that has kept a competing product alive and has a successful evolution from a simulator to a train driving game. I am sure that strategy has not gone unnoticed by N3V.

By carefully marketing the new product as a "simulation", but with obvious gaming attributes, N3V can stretch the potential market.

If N3V decides, in contrast to the competition, to use the new assets, routes and sessions happening on the simulation side to enhance the "game" side then we will have a solid future. The competitive product is now seeing this but they no longer have the talent to make the technical changes needed to entice train simulator innovators. If N3V adopts this "balanced" strategy upfront everyone wins.

"You have defeated Dr. Beeching's Beeching Axe! You gain 70013 EXP and find 1 BR Standard class 7 locomotive!"

*LEVEL UP*

"You have unlocked the British Pullman set and Southampton Ocean Terminal!"

I wonder if Trainz might become a MMORPG, due to the fact it now has Online Interaction, It's used on many Platforms now such as Mac and Ipad, it pretty much has Roleplaying as you are working with other players as a team to run freight, shunting and passenger.

Cheers.

They do have beta testers who Beta test the game and talk in the "tree trunk" about the "secret stuff" that they don't want the competitor, Failworks (AKA Trains 2014) to get a hold of.

I heard they are adding a death-match option in the next version. You can choose your favourite railroad and have to try and derail as many trains of the other party by bumping into them at switches .

Anyway, about the original question:
I think it is a hobby and don't really care how it is called. As long as it offers what I currently find in it, all the other aspects of this piece of software are extra.

Sadly we have to be a game - to fit into the marketplace. We'd love to be a piece of hobby software selling at $495 but we couldn't then list on Steam for example. Our mobile versions are under the categories Game > Simulation and Game > Family and that pretty much says it all. There's no great conspiracy theory going on here.
Btw, TANE (Trainz: A New Era) is based very much on the TS12 codebase (along with all the cool new features and new graphics engine of course) so you will see very similar "simulation" game play. Or if you prefer, simulation work play (after all you're doing it for fun not as a job). :)

How about calling it "Game of Trainz" - my favourite driver is Daenerys Targaryen :D

Now there's an idea for a layout. A route based on Westeros with tracks linking the cities of Kings Landing, Winterfell, Casterly Rock, Dragonstone (a ferry link of course), The Eyre (a funicular), etc.

If I should ever return to making content for Trainz I think I would concentrate on the historical real world about up to a century after the appearance of the first train.... so driveable sailing ships, steam trains, paddle steamers, steam ships, trams, no cars of course as all transport was horse driven including the canal barges so integrated transport as detailed.

Perhaps not to the taste of many of the forum members but see my posts re historical coastal and canal routes I make in the Blender Game Engine and due to Trainz increasing complexity I am unlikely to return anyway. B

At least you're consistent.....

That may be a good and bad thing I played a few horrible MMORPGs in my day.

The MP needs a over hull
