Trainz Sedentary Lifestyle-vs Exercise

I gotta do somting' ... The clothing tape measure won't fit round' my waist to measure it ... it's too short. I thought my GF shrunk my clothes in the drier.:hehe: I bent a steel tape measure round my waist ... Ahhh: 53" !

Exercise Bikes, Treadmills ... How bloody boring !

Brainstorm ... Combine Trainz, and Excersise Equipment ... Drive a train, and pretend you are running or cycling down a RR track.

Even better ... take a Trainz route and convert the track to instead display a gravel trail ... and take a jog down a rails to trails bicycle path.

Now to buy a treadmill, and wiretie a mouse and keyboard to the handlebars.:hehe:

And a wrap around tripple screen monitor set up ... or a 57" Plasma TV !

A pair of 3-D goggles would be even better. You run/jog, you see the Trainz route. Could be a problem if the route you are running is not the same as the Trainz route you are playing...

I actually like the idea of having a large monitor on a gaming PC to play Trainz while on the treadmill. Use Rail Driver controls, and you wouldn't even need a keyboard.
I might be more inclined to run on the TM if I had that. I am a long distance runner, and have a passionate hate for the treadmill.

I am building a Trainz route for the Boston Marathon. It keeps growing though; Now it will include several of the "T" lines, as well as the marathon road route. I would like to set up a bunch of runners on the course, while the trains go by. Maybe I can find some "runners" who will run on invisible tracks?

Dear cascaderailroad,

Forget the treadmill idea. (unless the winter gets totally unbearable) Start getting outside. Go to a park or something. Get used to the fresh air. Walk, but don't overdo it. Make it a lifetime thing.

Develope seperate worlds. The Trainz world. The real outside world with sun, trees, people and so on.

This sitting at computers can get to be a real bad thing, especially as you get older. Take my word for it, I am 67. All summer I was walking and enjoying the sights and sounds, no problem.

Just lately as the cold weather sneaks in, I am starting to sit more at home (slouched) at the computer again, and am getting a familiar pain in my back on the side I tend to slouch on.

Get outside and really look at things. You might find out that those weird purple and yellow flowers (made by robertoconti19) really look like that in real life!!

In the real outside, I find myself saying "That doesn't look like a real tree, that looks like a Trainz tree". !!!! Then I see a row of bushes and say "that doesn't look real! The guy should have rotated some of them" !!??

So. (if you are young), start working at expanding your life. And get smarter on the eating. Dieting all the time (and crashing) can be very bad. Slowly changing the way you eat over a lifetime is a better thing!

Well. that's my advice. Slow and steady can win the race !!!

My local bus service got modified sorry improved recently and no longer goes where I'd like to go when I like to go so I picked up one of these:

http://www.catrike.com/catrike_expedition.html

It works very well, I have a basket on a carrier over the rear wheel. I just use it to go shopping and run errands and I suspect I won't be using it in the winter at minus 30 only because they insist on spreading salt on the roads which isn't nice for these sort of things.

Don't worry about it.

It's better for you, the lower center of gravity makes you more stable. And when you fall, built in airbag no more face plants into the concrete.

When your young you strive for that chisel shaped body through endless exercise & pain to get those Broad shoulders down to a slim waist but then it happens the older you get science takes over and there's nothing you can do about it.

Remember : For every action there's an equal but opposite reaction.

After about 5+ hours of trying to bring old content up-to-date.....my backside is welded to my chair. Gotta find a putty knife...scrape it loose, then try again in the AM

Thing is that it's already the a. m., and my butt's been parked at the computer for a while also, and we both need to get to bed.

Yup, I need to make myself get some exercise. I spend a good amount time parked at the computer, eating probably around a PB&J a day, growin' a pot :hehe:, etc.; yup, need to get some exercise.

Regards,

Retro.

Funny you should say that, I've got broad shoulders and am working on the slim waist - not far

Exercise. EXERCISE!. How dare you mention that word. You should be thinking like retro and john and ed and others. It took a lot of work to get in this condition.

You're All Missing The Obvious!

You're all missing the obvious solution - yes, go outside...but go to a train station or where you can (safely) watch real trains!

I drop off and pick up my wife from the train station every day. Sometimes she has to go to the Elizabeth, New Jersey train station. I intentionally get there early so I can watch the commuter trains on the Northeast Corridor. There are no freights on that line, but there's four tracks of various New Jersey Transit and Amtrak rolling stock to keep me amused. And you can watch the signals.

I'm fortunate in that I work from home and live near tracks that are elevated on an embankment and has a nice paved walkway along side. I can go for walks and catch the commuter trains, but also the Norfolk Southern and CSX freights heading for Port Elizabeth. Twice I even saw a Canadian Pacific loco pulling with a Norfolk Southern (can anyone explain that one?)

But this way you get exercise AND some inspiration for your Trainz layouts!

Like a C5 http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sinclair_C5, minus batteries.

As for exercise - well my computers are upstairs and the kitchen is downstairs so I reckon the daily "step aerobics" for Coffee / Food / Beer etc. are quite good enough to keep my 120lb figure in trim :hehe: .

Wait until the knees go then you'll find the stairs are no longer an option. The Catrike is adjustable for the pedals and a lot more comfortable than the C5 looks.

Some people have dropped an electric motor on the rear wheel hub to make it easier to go up hills. The trike itself being made of Al is very light and a number of people have commented that they are much more stable on ice and snow than a conventional bike.

I found out years ago the cure for backside and back aches while using a computer. You have to make your working environment as ergonomic and comfortable as possible. Which is why I have everything built completely around my lazy boy:hehe:

24 inch monitor on a swing arm, computer within reach, keyboard mouse and tablet all wireless, ability to drive the 46 inch big screen in front of me, all with my feet up in a position that's extremely comfortable.

I agree a sedentary lifestyle is not conducive especially to the young. But there's nothing that says you can't be comfortable while working at the computer either.
