Trainz Problem

Hi,
I've just had to reinstall Trainz on my computer for the third time, I backed up all my content (about 18,000 folders) onto a separate hard drive.

When I copy some of my content back across to the 'Auran/local' directory (about 100 folders at a time), CMP takes a long time to start. I've even left it for over 3hrs, and it still hasn't started up, CMP seems to keep locking up. I am also unable to start Trainz.

I've also tried deleting the *.chump files to see if that made a difference, but unfortunately it didn't.

This is now getting a bit annoying as its happening every time. I've not managed to play Trainz for over two weeks now and I just don't know what to do next. I'm getting a bit fed up!

My PC system is as follows:
AMD Athlon 5600Mhz
2GB RAM
160GB HD
512MB Graphics Card
Running Windows XP

Can anyone shed any light on this issue?

Many thanks,
Paul :'(

Hi Paul,

Couple things here...

If you're running TRS2006, make sure you install the Service Pack Before you start CMP or Trainz for the first time. If this is 2006, why are you deleting Chump files? TRS2004 required that; not 2006 as far as I know.

Once you've installed the SP, you can then import your content into CMP. I have found this to be the 'safest' and easiest way to bring the content in. I'm talking nearly 20gig of downloaded items back in, which takes a very long time, but they do import.

After the information is imported, remember to commit the items. Select all, and press CTRL+M at the same time. This can take a while too.

The process will take a very long time and appear that the computer is hung. Leave CMP alone, go the the park, mall, take a nap, etc. I've even done this process at bedtime to ensure that the computer had the whole night to process the data. In the morning there were dialog boxes about duplicate (built-in items0, and the successful import of others. Once I dismissed these, I then committed the data.

Hope this helps. I understand your frustration.

John

Here's something you can try to see if CMP has died or is rebuilding the Trainz database.
Do a Control+Alt+Delete. This will open up Task Manager. In the Applications tab, Content Manager will be shown as a task. If it's running, that's what it will say under the Status column. If it's not running, it will say 'Not Responding' .
If it's not responding, end the task and open up CMP again amd see what the response is.
If it's running, check the Processes tab. You'll see Content Manager listed under the Image Name column. Then check under the Memory Usage column. If the numbers shown are increasing, that means CMP is rebulding the Trainz database and you'll have to wait until it's through.
You might even see it listed two or three times. If is is, 'End Process' on the one(s) where the numbers are not increasing.
This has happened to me several times, when I've gotten impatient and clicked on CMP two ot more times.
I've learned to check the Task Mamager and see what's going on, if it doesn't seem to respond.

When I copy some of my content back across to the 'Auran/local' directory (about 100 folders at a time), CMP takes a long time to start.

I'd say that you've just identified some 'dodgy' content.

As you move them over, each time CMP won't start cleanly take that bunch out again and put the next lot in.

That way you should end up with a bunch of stuff that causes problems. By adding them in smaller groups you should be able to narrow it down further and identify the real culprits.

(Was this content all 'fixed' or did it have loads of errors with it)

Mike.
