Trainz in the Beginning

Does anyone have screenshots of the original Trainz when it first started? It'd be interesting to see how much the series has progressed since then.

It's essentially the same as all subsequent versions except for the lack of virtual passengers & interactive industries.

I would say that most of the enhancements to the game hasn't really come from Auran but have come from the community (including payware which has added great content but i have not tried.) freeware things like boats ATLS system, BNSF50's NRC crossings that use ATLS, Maddy25 YARN roads, Sportbust, VMD, USLW and other sites that have great freeware content and Ocemys china engines and rolling stock have all added to game. And thiers probably much more that i haven't mentioned.
hert:cool:

I was running 1.3, I believe the first widely available version, in 2002. I suspect the first version was released in 2001.

I tried running the very first Trainz Community Edition on my old Voodoo 3 card, all the menus were blocked out with green bars. Could still run the game but had to guess a bit to start Surveyor and Driver and such.

Just for a bit of fun I installed Trainz 1.1.1 :hehe:

Well I got one without the curser :)

This is built in content, I do not intend to go through all the trouble of installing any custom stuff even if I could remember how :o because this was BC (before CDP)

Cheers David

Pommie

Hi Pommie,
That brings back some memories! I still have Trainz, used it for a while then 'upgraded' to UTC. One of the main differences I recall when 2004 came out was that stock could be placed anywhere without needing a marker to set them to.
Good old British Midlands - and it's still going strong....!! Needs and update in my opinion. And the blue 125 set.

Thanks for that Pommie.

I've still go the original version and all service packs. I loved the hazy horizons. When I installed 2009, I thought Driver was worse, but SP2 which I've never bothered to install probably improved things - a bit.

Trainz graphics have a certain....'timeless' quality....for almost ten years now it's been the 'Thomas Kinkade' Christmas Card treatment!

Thanks David ...

WOW .. how time flies, like Ed said ... almost 10 years later -- I'm sure many of our lives have changed in one form or another!!

PS. Welcome back Ed!

That's actually not the original box. This is the very first release of Trainz way back in 2001 (if I recall).

Note the wording: Model Railroading On Your PC. That was changed in the next print run because Auran realised that people weren't using it as a model railroad simulator. Here's part of what I had to say on another thread today:

I have the first Trainz CD Case in front of me. It was a single CD entitled Trainz... Model Railroading on your PC. The word Model was dropped soon after when Auran realised that most people were using the program as a real Rail Simulator. I think Trainz was the brainchild of Bob Shaw, who dreamed about a virtual model railroading program, rather than having to build the real thing in his loungeroom. As mikemike mentioned, most of the routes were loops (but quite long ones), however there were a couple of out and back routes chucked in.

I remember one where you could get off the loop and arrive/or leave fro a multi platform station in a city. Just outside the station were the usual crossovers and signals. In a forum post at the time, someone mentioned that there was a double slip switch buried away in the layout, but the best I could find was what looked like a double slip if it was made up with standard crossovers.

Not having much experience with Surveyor at the time, I set about designing a proper double slip switch. Being delighted with the result, I created what may have been one of the first third party tutorials for Trainz.

Here's a link.

The folks at Auran were a lot closer to their client base in those days, and it was lovely to receive a email from them thanking me for my contribution. The email went on to say that they didn't realise themselves that such a detailed piece of track could be created with Surveyor. I think that was just one of the thousand surprises they've had over the years.

Ahh, back to the old times, when what we see now as outdated junk was the leading edge in virtual railroading. And with the whole new range of key commands, I went back onto Trainz l'Originale and couldn't remember for the life of me whether the star was the horn or the 6 applied the brakes or 8 stopped you throttling! I couldn't even remember the hornsounds!:o

And now only ten years later, we have locomotives from 50% of the world's countries, hornsounds that make your eyes water, graphics that let you see 5 kilometres away, trees that have individual, realistic leaves, and CMP & DLS... all on one DVD disc! My, how things have improved.

I don't think I could ever go back now:(

I have too agree. The earliest version of trainz i have is 1st and 2nd edition (if thats from before TRS2006).
