Trainz 22 on Windows 7 i5 Dell Optiplex 7010

I had this Dell computer hanging around for a few years, haven't used it, it's a generation below the corrupted computer with Trainz on it, but I read other threads that Trainz should work on Win 7 but not sure about Trainz 22. I could also try it on a Win 10 computer that has a beefier RTX 2070 card, the computer with Win 8.1 has a GTX 3GB card. I'm not sure what graphics the Dell has. The only solution for the Windows Explorer bugging out and doing the green bar across the top would be to reinstall Windows fresh but that would erase all data. I tried the refresh and it doesn't work. Or try running Windows 10 on the computer with corrupted file explorer by going inside the case and moving the SATA cable from the platter drive with 8.1 on it to the ssd with Win 10 on it. The only way I'm going to be able to save my Trainz data is to save cdp's of stuff on an external drive to install on a different computer.

Have a look in task manager, performance, GPU and it will tell you what's there. It's probably an intel integrated graphics. Look it up on https://www.videocardbenchmark.net/gpu_list.php, Middleton for laptops needs a score of 350, anything else 1,500 is about the minimum and 10,000 is reasonable. Task manager right click on the bit at the bottom.

The Dell Optiplex brand is meant for offices and come with basic components such as integrated graphics, a minimal amount of RAM and small storage. Some models can be upgraded but you pay more in the long run due to the basic box to start with.

Also the power supply is usually limited and the smaller box means lower cooling. Having said that set the graphics down a bit and carefully select the right content and it will run TS22.

Yes, I forgot about that and I used to support whole offices of those machines. They're great workhorses for what they're meant for but upgrading them was expensive when I had to do that for special-use cases.

I also have a beefier computer with Win 10 and an RTX 2070 8 gb graphics card. Intel Core i7-10700K cpu 3.80 GHZ. The computer with Trainz on it now also has an i7 but a GTX 3 gb graphics card. I'm backing up most of my Trainz data to an external drive before the buggy computer with Win 8.1 decides to stop working one day. Windows got corrupted somehow and certain functions don't work and Windows Explorer sometimes hangs and doesn't show the drives on My PC and I have to reset Explorer. I think it would be best to move Trainz to a different computer before something goes wrong and I lose the Trainz data or it becomes inaccessible and I get sick to my stomach. Once I back up important things from drive C from the 8.1 computer that is partially corrupted, then I can perhaps start fresh on that computer and maybe use the solid state drive that came with it that has Win 10 on it. I'm currently running 8.1 on a platter drive for the past several years and the computer is from June 2019, and I get this pop up saying unsupported hardware, that the processor is designed for the latest version of Windows which would have been 10. I guess newer processors aren't designed to be backwards compatible with older Windows although 8.1 works it just nags you with that unsupported hardware box. Our mom gave us permission to get new computers when the old one failed. But she passed in the hospital on June 14, 2022 and her sister's son manages our bank accounts and a special debit card that he monitors and blocked certain things including most online things except the Trainz N3V site, Uber, Uber Eats, and a few other things. So, to get a new computer now we would have to ask him for permission and our debit card is set at a maximum $500 spending limit at a time. We only get $1,400.00 a month loaded onto the card. The beefier Win 10 computer we got last year in October on ebay for $500 from selling things. It dates to about 2021. Apparently though the processor doesn't support Win 11 so it could be a case where we are stuck with Win 10 unless we buy a whole new computer. A good gaming rig brand new is over $1,000. The ones for $300-400 are basic office computers I guess and some can't be upgraded much.

As long as you don't do banking on it win 10 is safe enough. My normal Trainz machine runs an RTX 2070 and generally speaking it works fine for what I do but I do have a second machine with an RTX 3080 for more demanding layouts. If you run short of dink space then a USB 3 external hard drive works fine. ugreen have some nice external cases on amazon that you can add an existing hard drive to.
