Trainz 2010 Monitor ficker

Would someone be able to help me with the 2010 Trainz video problem i am having? My screen flashes on and off rapidly when running the program. I am running windows 7 64 bit with hi spec 295 video card i7 processor etc. I do not have this problem with any other program.

I'm having these problems too.

whitepass, i've tried all of your suggestions and still no better.
Even tried a re-install with Anti-Virus disabled, and no improvement.

One possible cure. Always run trainz in the same resolution as your desktop. Example, I use desktop resolution of 1280x1024 and I run trainz in 1280x1024.

Change this in the video options in the launch menu and also in the trainzoptions.txt in your Auren/2010 folder.

Mart.

Problem fixed for me :) (No more flickering)

Fix: Turn off Shadows in the options menu before you luanch Trainz.

It would suggest there is a problem with shadows in Trainz 2010

My Spec:

Pentium E1850 Core duo @1.9ghz
2GB Ram
Nvidia Geforce 9800GT
Windows XP SP3 32Bit

I just purchased tz 2010 and i have to say this program is diabolical.
I have tz 2004 and 2006(and expansion packs).

I also have an i7 with a GTX295 and I get uncontrolled flashing.

After i installed TZ2010 you know where my 1st stop was??
You guessed it the run down to Apollo Bay on the Razorback scenario.
On both Vista 32 and 64 if I wait until say 10:30 and then over-run the "red over red" and trigger the end of scenario it crashes my computer necessitating a re-boot.

I've tried changing to DirectX as openGL wasn't working properly and the game initiates "critical exception bla, bla, bla" error as it starts up.
I switched back to OpenGL and the game never restarted again on Vista 64.
I uninstalled then reinstalled, then the stupid asset?? repairing box would come up.
The asset repair box came up twice: 1st time 1.5 hours and 2nd about 2+ hours. I gave up on Vista64 with TZ2010.

On a serious matter i ask the question;
What kind of people use their loyal customers (or any customer for that matter) as a marketplace test facility for their unproven products?

I didn't get this program for nothing. I'm not a tester.
I paid full retail price.

On the cover of the game no-where can i find a warning stating untested product, not compatible with GTX295, not compatible with SLI,
not compatible with Vista (particularly Vista 64), Razorback Content on this CD doesn't work and can't be made to work, not compatible with dual monitors, not compatible with DirectX.
Had i received a warnings to this effect i would have been informed and made a decision accordingly. Since no warnings accompanied the game i was deprived of my right as a consumer by Auran to make an informed decision.

The only operating system I have that I haven't tried TZ2010 on, is XP32.

The last time this happened with a program was in 1998. That game was iFA/18 an aircraft carrier based flight sim. Not since then have i encountered such rubbish programming as this (at least iFA/18 was in the early days of AGP).

To say that I am angry would be the mildest description I might apply.

I deeply resent being treated like this.

Regarding the flashes, I was having this problem before I patched to SP3, which I was told would fix it. It is not just Trainz itself it's cmp and ccp.

From the helpdesk's reply to me.
It appears that one of the 'background' programs for Trainz (TrainzUtil) is causing the 'flashes' when it closes, which is generally a few seconds/minutes after Content Manager or Trainz has opened.

It was partially fixed in the first two service packs, but SP3 got rid of it fully.

My settings were same screen res with shadows on, before, but that was not the problem. Nor was the OS I use XP SP3. The problem as stated lies with the trainzutil program and can be fixed by patching to SP3.

Well,
My version is EE and had SP2 in the build.

Since sp3 wouldn't install in Vista64 I tried Vista 32.
SP3 twice stopped at the 50% point, the first time an hour and the second time i can't be exactly sure but was in the order of 3.5hrs.

On Vista32 I updated to SP3 before playing the game.
All of the flickering the issues described in my post above are for Vista32.
So SP3 has nothing to do with it, on my machine at least.

I have found since my post above (and reading other posts here) that if i turn off SLI and disable multi monitor in nvidia control panel i can play some maps without flashing.

Trainz EE 2010 is so new for me that I have had no time to explore all maps.
What i can tell you is that when I load Avery Drexel it crashes the game to desktop 5/5 times so far.

So in order to play the game i have to:
1) disable SLI
2) Disable multi monitor
3) re organize my desktop)
4) not go near Razorback
5) not go near Avery Drexel

When completed I have to:
1) re enable multi monitor
2) re enable SLI
3) re organize desktop

That is 6 steps to play and shut down the game.
I saved a game last session, Port Ogden and Northern, in cab mode.
I wonder if it will load?

I can play trainz 2006 on this computer no probs. WTF is going on?

i dont have to disable multi monitors when i play. i have two monitors and play trainz on one of them.

in some situations the SLI will cause trainz to flicker, for me its in any menu or when a tooltip or hover text appears. i just set a trainz game profile in my video card control panel to turn off SLI and i dont have to do it automatically. i did several tests, SLI does nothing to help improve trainz, so its okay by me if it is off. if i did my math correctly, this means no steps to play the game, in fact, i just double click mine now and hit play.

Avery Drexel used to crash mine too, it was upon closing the intro video. you can disable these now if they are a problem. i used to just slide the window off screen and play the session :) as long as i didnt hit the 'x' to close it it never crashed.

as far as patching to service packs, if you stop them mid way you have to start all over from scratch. best thing to do is leave it alone as long as you can. i am sure you can find other things to do.

Justin is correct, I've seen the “flickering” issue with many games that can't use multiple GPU's like Trainz with ATI's Cross Fire and Nvidia's SLI.

You can sometimes get it to stop by trying to force alternate frame rendering or split frame rendering on the game but most of the time disabling multi-GPU mode is the only thing that helps.

With CPU dependent games like Trainz multiple GPU's (SLI or Cross Fire) are useless.

nhancer can do this for nvidia cards.

The real reason I'm unhappy is because it states on the back cover in recommended section at the bottom left:
Vista/Windows7 (64 bit), 2gb ram
Core 2 Duo or equivalent,
nvidia Geforce 8800.

When a game manufacturer makes a statement such as these then I believe it is not unreasonable for me, the consumer, to believe that this game supports multi-threading and has 64 bit support.
This game does neither.
The way it plays indicates this most clearly.
If Toronto Rail Lands was on the game I doubt Speedtree alone would increase frame rates.

In 9/10 games (make that 10/10) i have purchased in the last 5 years if it says Core 2 you see 2 active graphs in task manager.
Not in this game however! Nor is it capable of utilizing the benefits of 64 bit computing except on a very superficial level if at all.

In a game released in 2010 I would expect better performance, greater draw distance (unlimited), much more fluid in heavy asset environments,
DX10, multi threaded programing at the least.

Ideally physics and cuda (ATI equivalent) could be utilized. Then the programming would be more sophisticated.
We're still in P4 Northwood 2004-5 phase.

Further, I would like to see in this game the removal of aliased control stands, interiors and engine sound in locomotives.
In 1950's locomotives I don't want to see modern controls.
I don't want to engage Dynamic/regenerative brake in a tram unless so equipped. I don't want to go fast in a tram.

I would like to see the radiator "wings" overhanging from inside the cab when running long hood 1st in the Chinese Locos.
If the loco is green on the outside then I'd like it to look green from the inside as well.
Is a GM EMD cab interior on a GE correct?..I don't think so. I think the Alco sound is just passible. The uneven beat of the unequal stroke length GE generator may be more appropriate however if so equipped.

I also dislike the aliasing of sound.

The dynamic brake simulation is generally poor (they don't work like this, as in a real loco the generator is notched to 4 or 5 under no load to spin up the traction motor cooling fan because the traction motors get hot when generating power)
The retardation occurs depending upon speed or whether extended range dynamic braking has been fitted and is in actual use ie. 2 settings normal/extended. I would like dynamic fan noise also.
If independent brake is applied whilst dynamics are in use instant wheel locking occurs resulting in flat spotted wheels on the prototype because of the double braking effect. This shouldn't be too difficult to simulate, surely. [the locking not the flat spots]

Super-elevation on concrete track would be a minimum.
Fix the problem when constructing layouts where the tunnels twist like a dying snake. This is really annoying. It takes planning to get them straight and that means too much time.

I could easily handle say only 2 or 3 closely prototypical Locomotives in the game, rather than 50 rubbish ones with 2 or three average ones.
Again I hate aliased interiors and sound.
I would pay $50 for a new locomotive as an add-on as in FSX.For example: if you could have correct sound for engine type and the bloody thing looks the same from the inside as it does from the outside.

A minimum Standard for all rolling stock would be a bonus.
I note that in trainz 2010 some Bettendorf/Barber trucks have a nice prototypical ribbing detail on the axle side of the wheel face on some cars and others don't.
If we were to improve the game (read: simulation) then if it is fitted with one of the above bogies then that is the one that makes it to the game.
So you can't have different Bettendorf/Barber trucks ie. one higher detail and another lower detail in the game; there is just one.

This principal could then be applied to all bogie types. (standardizing, just like the prototype)

For me this game simulation is hardly an improvement over Trainz 2006, even if it is graphically better (particularly Port Ogden and Northern).

Many of my gripes were OK for TZ2006 but it is supposed to be evolving not re visiting the short comings of the previous incarnation.
Is this game a simulation or an arcade game? Neither i feel. It is trying to be all things to all people.
