Trainz 2009

I used to be really into trainz back in the day but one thing drove me NUTS. Floating track and floating roads. If you ever auto-leveled track or roads they'd float a good half meter or so off the ground.

I'm thinking about getting trainz 2009 since it sounds like some big improvements, but can anyone tell me if the floating track problem is still there?? It was enough to sour me on trainz before and I don't want to go out and get it if track still hovers way off the ground.

Half a metre is a bit of an exaggeration. I believe the official figure is 0.2m and that it was introduced to prevent strobing and, yes, it is still there.

It does, however, now depend on the mesh. Many of us build our track meshes to remove this effect. That said, to work with bridges, etc, you do need to make one to the 'normal' heights, but these only need to be placed for a short distance. Chunky mesh track (true chunky mesh) can't do this IIRC. The 'newer' 'MRT' based tracks can. The new TS2009 'stitched track' system most definitely can.

So, short answer. Depends on the track. Newer tracks can be made this way, but depends on the author...

Yeah back in the day I found some road splines that were actually 3d and didn't have the obvious float, but the problem was they then didn't line up with anything that snapped to roads. It's frustrating having to juggle tons of custom content just to get your scenery consistently not hovering a couple feet off the ground. Does 2009 come default with non-floating stuff?
