The driver was lucky. What a shock to the train crew too!

The title of the article was confusing though - probably typical of the media. "Car hit by train after plunging off railway bridge on to tracks in Blue Mountains??"

I interpreted this as the car driver was on some railroad tracks and plunged off of the train bridge onto another line below.

I had recently dined with one of those who died as a result of the accident and knew well one of the badly injured, they were both travelling in the First Class (at the front of the train and taking the brunt of the impact). We had occasion to call on the York Fire Brigade for a domestic incident the following day, only to find that the crew had just come from 'duties' at the Great Heck site - not pleasant.

The car driver got a 5 year jail sentence.

See, now I read the title as "Train falls off rail bridge, lands on car below". Journalist worldwide need a refresher in proper usage of words, in my opinion, as it is obviously a "highway" bridge (or railway underpass, since the railway passes under the highway), over a rail line, not a rail bridge over a highway.
