Town Cut In Half

Somehow I would think there should be many miles of unused track that doesn't bisect a town. Am I wrong?

Its a "money" thing. Leasing/renting these tracks through this town makes "whom ever" X amount of $$. So screw the town, the poeple, etc.
If they were flat cars, dbl stacks, maybe the out cry would not be so great, but auto racks are like a wall. I do feel for the town and its people.

They should fine the railroad every day they leave a car blocking a street. If they have to leave them there, they should at least not cut off traffic.

:cool:Claude

This is becoming all too common around the country.

Since World War II, US ships have been laid up in "Ghost Fleets" where they sit, float, and wait for their end, or their rebirth.

Now we have "Ghost Trains". Miles of unused railcars and locomotives, waiting for their future.

Its a sign of the times, although the Ghost Trains came about for a far different reason then the Ghost Fleets were created.

I don't know if they are blocking roads. I mean, it appears that way, and that fellow was complaining about going to the next street and the like, but they didn't actually show any cars blocking crossings.

The cars weren't blocking the streets. If you look, the consist was broken at each street to allow travel. I wouldn't call them industrial eyesores like they do in the video, but I understand where the people are coming from. Autoracks are probably the worst car that you could have blocking your town, since they are very large, and very yellow.

I think the wide scale graffiti is a problem along with the huge yellow cars. Most of the cars area heavily tagged.

Bah. This is a lame excuse to use precious News time. Big yellow rail-cars ruining their town. Hell, the Town of Victor NY, is in a similar situation, where literately a mile and half long block of Auto-racks are sitting on the former Lehigh Valley main. There were no real industries that required service beyond where they sit, so its not a bother! I dont know why these people complain, if you want to really do something about it, here's a few good tips.
1. BUY AMERICAN CARS. These foreign Imports from japan and China, and Where-ever they come from are useless crap boxes designed so that the Chinese get richer from the crap they make that we sadly buy.
2. Know who your electing into office. Just because Obama promised change doesn't mean it'll come any time soon. Maybe in the next 20 years. Bush was no better. He was the idiot who signed the massive tax breaks to allow the big businesses of America to go to China and India to where the Cheap labor is, to produce crappy goods. I can't buy a toy for my 5yr old nephew without worrying that he's going to get Lead, or some other type of poisoning from it.

Don't like my opposition? DEAL WITH IT.
I am entitled to my opinion.
/end rant.

I would buy a Ford, but the reason Americans do not buy American cars is that for the most part (Ford Excluded) they are 30 years behind the foreign companies.

For example, I own a 1986 BMW 535i. 232,800 miles, 23 years old. Amazingly, it gets better gas mileage then a large number of GM's and Chrysler's built this year (assuming Chrysler builds any cars this year). Its also dead reliable. No major mechanical problems in the last 11 years. I know this because my Step Father was good friends with the previous owner, hence why we got the car at all. The Water Pump was replaced when we got it, and we just replaced the Clutch Slave Cylinder, and the Hose to the Cluth Master Cylinder needs to be replaced. In the last 11 years, thats what has been replaced, or needs to be replaced.

My Girlfriend has a 2001 Ford Focus (I cant say what she calls it because there are kids around here). New transmission last year, numerous trips to the shop, it was a $4,000 car, and about an extra $8,000 has been spent on it.

One of her friends has a 1994 Ford Taurus. It has 224,000 miles, slightly less then mine. He just had to replace the brake control valve, the entire Left Rear brake and wheel assembly. When looking for parts at the Junk Yard (he could not afford the $3,000 for new parts) almsot every single Taurus had the exact same problem. The Left Rear brake sticks, and does not release, killing the whole brake assembly in the process, causing smoke, and a grinding noise because everything was worn down to bare metal.

Another friend of mine had his parents buy a new GM SUV (cannot recall the exact model). After 1 year, the interior was falling apart, after 2 years, it had been to the shop over 26 times for major and minor work. 2 years old, thankfully it was under warranty, but how badly can a car be built that it needs major work after less then 2 years????

Reliability and quality are whats wrong with the American Auto Industry. Ford can say whatever they want in a commercial, but a Toyota is far higher quality then a Ford. Toyota's last forever, and are very reliable if you take care of it.

Now, I do think Ford is better of the Big Three. They made some very good choices in the last few years, their new cars are about a 20 year leap forward. Gas Mileage is improving drastically, the only question I have is reliability over 5-10 years.

The worst experience I had was with a New Hybrid Esclade. It got 20 MPG Highway according to the sticker. I get better then that in my nearly quarter century old BMW. Their 30 years behind the rest of the world, and until they catch up, their customers will continue to buy imported cars.

But remember, just because its a foreign company, does not mean the cars come from Overseas.

BMW has a HUGE plant in Georgia. All Z4's are Made in America. In fact, they had a contest once with the German plant over quality. The American Plant won, buy building a higher quality BMW 3 series then the German Plant. Needless to say, the Germans were not happy about that

Honda has tons of Plants in the US, as does Toyota, Hyundai, Subaru, and a few others. They may be foreign companies, but lots of their cars that are sold here are also built here, by Americans for Americans.

As for Asian Labor. You get what you pay for. You want to pay less and make more profit, safety and Quality are the first things to go. moving manufacturing over there is a HUGE mistake. And it needs to change. The only good news there, the call Centers in India were in the news a few years back. The workers who were working for far less then an American started demanding American Wages and Benefits. So I have a feeling that will start to move the jobs back here. At least thats my hope

im sure the railroads think the houses are a residential eyesore. get real. i understand you don't wanna see a train but i can tell you this much, no one twisted their arm in order to get the buyer (homeowner) to buy the house. i know when i bought my house, i made sure i wasn't going to live anywhere near a track. besides, what do these people expect to happen on railroad tracks. you buy near a railroad, you put up with railroad equipment. i didn't watch the video because honestly, its probably another one where the crossings are cut and the railroad is doing everything legally they are required to do. i really hate saying that and sounding rude for anyone experiencing it. maybe if the local news would try to educate people as to why the railcars are stored, then it might calm people down to see the railroads are hurting just like everyone else. i don't blame them if they don't move them, its their property anyway

I agree, you were not forced to buy the house, it was your choice.

The people living in Durango complain about smoke and soot from the Durango and Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. They have been operating steam locomotives SINCE 1880, they never stopped operating at all, continious operation since 1880. And now people move there and complain about the steam engines. Well guess what, you moved there, you knew there were steam engines, not the railroads problem.

But of course, it became their problem, and now diesels are used for switching, which I suppose is not that bad, they can get the Steamers under the scrubbers faster, which is better for the planet. But the residents complaints just astound me.

Another case is people moving around Midway Airport in Chicago and complaining about Aircraft traffic. well, your choice to buy the house next to an airport

I thought you wern't allowed to talk about politics on the forums...:o

There should be tons of Unused rail yards as well, perhaps they are all full? Im not sure but I dont see this happening to Goshen, we have about 80 a day go through here, the only reason people complain about them is the tracks that go from Goshen south to Warsaw have a sharp right curve which slows the trains down to about 15MPH or less. and I usually get crap about it from people who are at school who were late because of them. I say to them, I don't make the trains I just enjoy them.

Yeah I got what you're saying. A new small housing development went right next to the UP tracks near my house. Then after people started buying those houses they started complaining to the RR about the horns as there is a crossing there. So now the trains can't blow their horns at those crossings anymore... I miss hearing the horns at night. So in defiance, at 5:30 in the morning as a freight train rolled by the engineer laid on the horn for 5 min straight without taking a break. I laughed so hard when I heard it. I thought it was the greatest thing the RR did about it. After he did it one more time he got moved to another line.

Honestly who cares? The Railroad can do whatever they please with their ROW. They can rip it up,place tracks, whatever. Pretty soon trains won't be able to roll through towns at all and they must be completely invisible and blend in with there surroundings. As long as they aren't blocking crossings, who cares! You don't have to live next to the tracks. It is easier for YOU to pick up and move then it is for an entire railroad to change simply because a few disgruntled people don't like the looks of them, and in most cases the tracks or ROW were there LONG before the houses we even built,so lets go back to high school and say Seniority first? Out of all the other stuff to make the news this makes it? But I guess it is better then hearing about people dieing left and right everyday...
