TOO MUCH STEAM LOCOMOTIVE SMOKE & PRIMING

I KNOW I HAVE BEEN TALKING ALOT ABOUT STEAM LOCOMOTIVES IN GENERAL BUT THERE IS ONE THING THAT BOTHERS ME THE MOST ABOUT SHOVELING COAL INTO THE FIREBOX AND THE MORE I LOOK AT THE RATE OF COAL I START TO WONDER WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF I SHOVEL TOO MUCH AT ONCE AND HOW MUCH SHOULD I ADD? I KNOW BACK FROM WHEN I WAS PLAYNG MSTS WHAT HAPPENS IS IF YOU ADD TO MUCH WATER IN THE BOILER THE CYLINDERS CAN BREAK AND I NEED TO KNOW IF THAT CAN HAPPEN IN TRAINZ AND WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO ADD SOME WATER?

Sorry, I just need to know what is the easiest way not to make so much smoke when running a steam locomotive in terms of coal and trying not to break the locomotive's cylinders at the same time because I'm trying to avoid priming with any steam locomotive that is in the game so how should I do this?

Hi UP5521,

First the water, keep the boiler between 50% and 70% full, add water when the safety valves are blowing off or if the boiler gets below 50%. If you add water because the safetys are blowing dump it in fast but if it is just because the boiler is getting low add the water slowly. You should try to adjust the injector so the boiler maintains a constant level, a little more when climbing an incline, a little less when decending or slowing down.

Add coal when the fire goes down to an orange colour usually only two or three shovles at a time.
In real life you can also add coal to damp down the fire when the safetys are blowing off but this does not work in Trainz.

As for the smoke, this is controled in the performance options, see "particle affects". The amount of coal you use will not make any difference to the smoke in Trainz.

One other thing, when a steam loco is stationary the cylinder drain cocks should always be open and remain open till the train has moved off and the wagon couplings have tightened.

thanks that will help me when it time for me to jump into the cab of a steam locomotive for real but first I'll do some research until then!
