to speedtree or not to speedtree - that is the question

Well that link DOES allow the download to work...but if I go to the page on my own, it won't - weird! (Does one need all the files, or will the most recent update at the top be enough?) - EDIT: I answered my own question here. I've downloaded them all and only had a couple overwrites, so each "update" pack is simply more trees, not really updates to the original pack. Thanks!

The language barrier is a bit of a problem with Russian content - Google Translator makes a total hash of it but as I understand it you should only use the "Abh","BMO","SLD" and new "EK" content trees, earlier ones have issues which the later content corrects. Links are in the trainzup speedtree thread in the freeware forum.

As to the download issues trainzup's host had a serverside virus issue which may now be fixed, but the content was unavailable for a while....

I only use BMO and SLD trees. They work very well. (and they almost look real!:p )

Edit. Andy, I wasn't aware there were specific EK2 trees. Where's the link for them. I can't find them.

Kinda off topic...

Neither can I! They were not at Trainzup yet but were available with Pofig's EK3 Beta thru a link in the trainzup speedtree thread which appears to have been removed now that the 'open beta' is finished. I assume the y will appear at trainzup 'soon'. Probably a typo but they are EK3 trees, not EK2...

Andy :)

Thank you Andy for letting me know about splines, I wasn't too sure with them, whether they would cause me problems over frame rates more than speedtrees, luckily enough I've only just started a new route, so the splines can be replaced by grass from the greenery website.

Joe trackside grass (if there is a lot) is may be one spline exception. If you only want the 'occasional clump' look, then objects it is. On the other hand if you are aiming at the 'continuous carpet of grass' look then splines probably work out about the same performance hit and arguably look better, but restrict yourself to a couple of different splines and don't take the grass too far from the track...

Andy :)

Hmm, I downloaded all (8?) packs and only have the BMO, SLD, and EK ones (plus there is one Abh tree). Not sure what the "bad" culprits are named, but the above three groups all start with either 3DE_Pg_xxx or 3D1_Pg_xxx. They look great, it'll just take a while to sort through the few hundred of them to find a half-dozen or so to litter the landscape with (I'm thinking the EK3 ones are probably the best bet)!

thanks everyone for the advice

Since I am the original poster, I want to thank everyone for their advice, and especially glad to learn that speedtrees are a performance plus, not a negative, since I like the way most of them look. Since my route was imported from TC1&2 into TS2010, there were no speed trees to start with. So what I did today was pick 6 decidious speedtrees (mostly for use in town) and 6 conifer speedtrees, and will limit my route to these. Then I used the "replace asset" function, which was new to me, and hunted down every tree and replaced with one of the 12 speedtrees. Fortunately, my route did not have more than 15 or 20 so different non-speedtrees, so it went fairly quickly. Then I hunted down every tree spline and deleted it, with 2 exceptions:

1. I kept a couple of JVC tree splines by jankvis which tend to be small and useful for rows of identical trees along a boulevard.
2. Orchard splines for which there does not seem to be alternative choice.

Next step will be forestation of the wilderness with a mixture of the 6 conifers using the copy/paste tool.

Thank you Andy, your advice is very welcome and your help is very much appreciated.

Also thank you to schweitzerdude, for letting me ask a couple more questions, which will hopefully help you out in the future.

I think you've made a good decision schweitzerdude, be sure to post some screens when you have an area completed.

I've only just started to use SpeedTrees and this is probably a silly question...

but does anyone know if there is an equivalent for grass & shrubs?

Cheers,

For shrubs jankvis has a few, see his freeware thread and the Pofig has quite a lot, see his thread.

Grass, quite a lot of jankvis's stuff works ok in native mode, just a case of finding the ones that work and I think pofig has some or there are some on TrainzUp not sure as I use jankvis's old stuff.
