Amen to that, I just sat down to start this thread! Prayers and best wishes to all those affected. Tidal wave warning for California, Oregon, and Hawaii as well, so get out of the way.
 
PLEASE NOTE THIS IS WHAT THE SBS NEWS IS/HAS BEEN REPORTING

SBS News has stated a Tsunami for almost all of the Pacific Basin, but then it shows that the US has widen the Tsunami warning for all of the Pacific Basin (including Hawaii) except Canada, and parts of mainland USA.

This Tsunami warning also still includes New Zealand.

We know that Japan/New Zealand are in earthquake areas, but I wonder why the recent earthquakes have been large.

The scenes I have seen on TV are really horrific, actually watching live as the Tsunami was moving inland destroying everything in its way. Some of the reports had heights between 4-10m depending on the location.

My deepest sympathies to all the people of Japan and I hope our fellow members are safe and well.

According to SBS News, 5th biggest earthquake in the last 100 years.

I believe the Bullet Trains have resumed limited service.

And according to the reports, the closest nuclear power stations shut down automatically.

This sudden rise in geological catastrophes seems a bit frightening. :eek:

Those videos are images of tremors?? Look more like the main earthquake.
Quite a number over 5, with one about 7 point something.

Their is (or was) a warning to also include (parts of/all of ?) Australia at 15:35 (UTC time I think, about 2:35am next morning)

UTC and GMT are the same the time
GMT +11 hours is our local time due to day light saving
so about 3:30am

Hey SBS, STOP cutting the news report - right in the important sections.

So why is CNN still saying their is a threat to Australia, when that link states the Australian threat(s) have been cancelled?

Edit: I can't understand how Australia was once at threat, but New Zealand is still under threat. Wouldn't you think parts of Australia would be at threat of the wave(s) first, more than what N.Z. would?

My guess is that the Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia and the Solomon Islands (?) will create a bit of an obstruction in the path of the tsunami, causing it to just be a minor wave hitting Northern Australia.

All the IBTZ community sympathies for Japan and the Japanese trainzers.

We all over here are starting blowing hard contrarywise the big wave everywhere in the Pacific. Pacific, please, go pacific again.

My Dad was born and raised in Japan, moved to the US when he was 10 with his mother. He contacted his brother in the northern island of Hokkaido after the 8.9 quake. He said they were all ok. However this was before the tsunami and we don't know how far north the tsunami went. My Uncle's house is only 4 or 5 blocks from the harbor. We haven't heard from them since.

As for our family and friends on the main island of Honshu, we have heard nothing. We are still waiting for anything to here they are ok. But I fear it is going to be a long time. Japan only had 15 minutes of notice before the tsunami hit.
