This Looks Great!

Hi All

Subsequent to my last post (thanks again for the advice) I went ahead and bought "2010EE" and have today installed it.

Normally I would look to update a game before I even bothered trying it, but I was chomping at the bit to see this and so I had a quick look at it straight out of the box. It looks fantastic! I never had a machine which would do a program like Trainz proper justice before (I've had the original, 2004 & 2006 before this one.) and this time I just whacked the resolution up to max and went for it. I played the first tutorial and..... what can I tell you, it just looks amazing. I can't wait!

I do need to ask you about the patching though, because clearly before I play properly I need to do my Trainz housework.

The auto patcher is not playing ball, only getting so far before it says it has aborted, so it looks as though I'll have to do it manually. I found what I think is the right page, which has service packs (which are the patches right?) and from my version number (42203) I "think" I am on service pack 1 and need to be on service pack four?

So my questions are;
1/ Am I right about that?
2/ Do I need to apply the service packs sequentially or can I just apply SP4?
3/ I saw something on the page about allowing the patch to run all night??? What???? I must be reading the wrong thing right? The actual game install was only 10-15 mins or something like that! Had the auto patcher worked there was certainly no indication that it was going to take more than the standard few mins that most game patches do and putting aside the fact that I'm not keen to set about something that huge, I'm certainly not happy about the idea of leaving the PC on all night. (Nah.. it's wrong for sure. I'm reading it wrong.)

All the best

I would stop at build 44088.

Why?
I am running build 49933 (the non multiplayer latest build) and see no problems with it. This build still has compatability mode.

Also if TrainzBadger is interested in multiplayer he needs to patch to 49938 but he needs to be aware that if he goes to 49938 he will loose compatability mode to run older content and everything will need to be run in native mode.

Since I am not interested in multiplayer, I would recommend 49933 since it solves a few problems when saving layouts when not connected to the internet.

Some users have encountered new bugs at build 49933.

As to answer TrainzBadger's questions:

1.That is correct, but SP4 is the multiplayer version.
2.You need to install the patch that Euphod has linked to above first, then decide if you want multiplayer or not.

Because I know of problems caused by going beyond 44088 as Shane has stated. A suggestion, if you have the hard drive space, patch to 44088 and then copy your 2010 game into another folder, then patch that one. That way you can try it for yourself.

and everything will need to be run in native mode.
Hi Scottish.... what's that then? (Sorry.. non tech head here. Many stupid questions may follow in future posts.)

Thanks all for replying so quickly. I think I'm seeing a pattern forming. :D

Following Shane's advice I think I'll stay at this station for a while, once I've updated using Euphod's link. I'd never considered multi-player to be honest, although I might well be interested at some point.

Out of interest... I've always considered playing in Trains to be more or less a solitary pursuit. What do you fellas get up to when you are playing a typical multi-player game? I mean I just can't see how Deathmatch is going to translate.. :hehe:

Hi again Badger,

Just to let you know, most of the users who do multiplayer do so with TS12 rather than TS2010.

The only two reasons you would need to patch beyond 44088 are:
  • If you want the Aerotrain Downloadable Content (DLC)
  • If you want TS2010 Multiplayer Beta.
Another thing to watch out for is a known issue with texture compression (especially if you have not previously used TS2009/TS2010). If you encounter assets appearing all black or in weird multicolours, or even all white, visit my tutorial website for the fix for this problem (at http://trainz.shaneturner.co.uk/tutorials/index.php?page=black-textures-issue)

As for the Native/Compatibility mode, I will be doing a blog post shortly about it.

I say: Trainz2010EE 49933 is the best you can get.
Everything runs fine, even the oldest content.
Some things stay red in the menu but it works all fine.
Oldest stuff what I have running is some UTC... no problem at all.

Chickens! Every one of them chickens!

Seriously, I play on 12, so I guess you would be better served to listen to these guys that still use 2010! I'm sorry if I led you astray of the 2010 best use pathway!

Seriously, I have everything working in TS12 that I had working in TS10 including clones of TS10 built-ins. A few do show some warnings that can be ignored. Almost all errors can be repaired with the tools available.
