The Shape of Baseboards

I seem to remember seeing somewhere that baseboards are 760 (I think!) metres square.

If that is true, why is it when viewed in Surveyor or Driver, they appear oblong?

My guess would be it is an optical illusion. The baseboards are square. Maybe you have your FOV set to something other then default?

Create a new map, and while you are in there just spin the camera, that might be a better way to judge the true shape.

If they dont look square while on a blank map, perhaps your video settings are a bit off.

I hope my ramblings have aided you in some way :)

Mini-map

Baseboards, and especially in mini-map do look rectangular, and circles and arcs are not round, and are distorted also. I have found that the only way to make a perfect circle, or an arc, is to draw with the ruler tool, from a central radius, 12 spokes of a wheel, all radiating out from the central point. Or by downloading prefabricated sectional curved tracks on DLS, and placing hand laid track next to it, as a tracing guide.

The baseboards are 720 x 720 meters square and the 10 meter grid on them is square as well. The minimap distorts them into rectangles when you view it. If the grid lines appear to be not square to you when looking straight down on the baseboard in Surveyor, then fuzzies has it right and you need to adjust the FOV numbers. This would happen if you are using one of the newer widescreen monitors.

Does the Trainz resolution aspect ratio match that of the monitor? Maybe you've got "stretchyvision", the effect when a 4:3 picture is made to fill a widescreen 16:10 television screen. Just an idea.
