The Pan Am Railway and Norfolk Southern have teamed up to form a joint operation called Pan Am Southern. With New York State funding, and some fed money, they've been working on a new intermodal yard on what used to be the famous Mechanicville Yard located outside of Albany, NY.

The photos show the progress from an abandoned area with a single track going through, what was once a huge freight yard to, the rebuilding with big dump trucks digging out dirt, and the placement of crossovers.

Cool!

Very interesting. It is always good to see redundant sites re-invented and become useful again. By the look of it this will be quite substantial when finished. What traffic is this going to cater for - movements to/from the Boston area I assume?

Bob,

This yard is going to be for container traffic and automobiles headed for the Boston Area. Ayer, MA has a big auto-unload facility that receives a large number of autoracks.

I'm glad too to see the yard reused for something other than a WalMart or Target, which usually happens around here.
