The Best There Is, Was, and Ever will be!

It depends, alot of them were great railroads. Some where just more influential than others.

I personally think that one of the more influential railroads was the Reading. They invented standardization, the firebox that could burn Anthracite, as well as, under the maniacal Franklin B. Gowen, showed America's railroad that the railroad had the power to control prices, and that it wasn't just a public service. It was also the only Conrail asset that could have recovered from its bankruptcy. Even though it only had around 300 route miles, it had managed to compete with the PRR, the largest corporation in the world at the time, and in some regards, surpass them. The railroad also built the world's largest coal classification yard, and America's largest railyard at Saint Clair. (It was eventually surpassed by the UP, and then forgotten when it was abandoned in the 1970s. And yes, it was larger than Enola.) It hauled the most important commodity to America, Anthracite coal. The coal that fueled the industrial revolution. When it came to this coal, it was by a large margin, the largest carrier. (Anthracite was so important that during the strike of 1902, Teddy Roosevelt actually addressed the nation and told them that unless the coal miners got the rights that they deserved, noone was going to be able to heat their houses that winter.) This is the railroad that caused the rivalry between the PRR and the NYC, as well as the hatred between the PRR and the B&O. The railroad also owned the largest tidewater port in the world at Port Richmond. It owned the second and third diesels ever used in rail service,(its subsidiary, the CNJ owned the first.) as well as was the first railroad to begin actively dieseling. It provided iron to Bethlehem Steel in Bethlehem, as well as coking coal. It sent ore to the Johanna iron mine in order to get it pelletized before taking it to the mill. It also ran a successful commuter service in the Philadelphia area, as well as a very successful passenger service all over its system. Most of the trackage built by the railroad is still used today by NS and the R&N. In fact, the original mainline(Philly to Pottsville), as well as the cross line(Allentown to Gettysburg) is still a very vital rail corridor used by the two railroads to service eastern PA.

Is the Reading the best railroad of all time? No, as they were all important in their own regard, and they were all interconnected. Without the business and competition of the other railroads, a singular railroad would not do as well. But was it influential and important, that is a resounding yes.

I also like the DRGW. (Though they are now known as UP because they decided to take on that name's recognition when they acquired the railroad. I just wish that they would have kept the black and orange paint.)

Ok, I mean best railroad, i mean if people or the general public could name a railroad, they'd name one like my fav 5

OBO'S TRAIN CATALOG HAS 1800 ENTRIES!

My favorite roads would have to be

ET&WNC obviousely
EBT
ACL
and the lines that became todays NS. You know the two mergers, but I prefer the originall.

My favorite still in existence would have to be the Aberdeen & Rockfish.

Rock On!

DP, please, im not trying to insinuate anything, but please work on your grammer, and punctuation, as well as learning how to type.:)

I believe that the correct spelling for your post would be, obviously not obviousely, and original not originall.

Your welcome sir.

East Coast Main Line in the UK Always had the latest gear (streamlined trains etc) , saw the world speed record for steam set by "Mallard" and later the Deltics, the most powerful diesels in the world.

"quite" :p

I still stand behind my reasoning that there is no "best railroad."

But I think that this thread isn't about that anyway. It is just about what is everyone's favorite railroad, hence the lack of any explanation behind any choices.

... Didn't we have this thread about 16 times before.:hehe:

what a couple of strasburg steam locmotives where in the movies PRR 1223, and STRASBURG 475 in thomas and the magic railroad.
