The Axe! – Graphic tribute/epitaph

Good evening everyone.

Yes – almost fifty years have passed since Dr Richard Beeching closed a huge part of the UK rail network in the 1960s.

More than 4,000 miles of railway and 3,000 stations closed in the decade following the report, a reduction of 25 per cent of route miles and 50 per cent of stations. To this day Beeching's name is unfavourably synonymous with mass closure of railways and loss of many local services.

These two screenshots were inspired by a Wiltshire countryside visit yesterday – close to some of my old trainspotting haunts back in those early days. Nice memories.

With apologies to the regular UK builders who may well find errors, and also to all “sworn enemies of Dr Beeching”.

I’m sure the bridge isn’t right, and the telephone box should perhaps be a K2 but here goes anyway (toggle F11 for full screen).

Then and now ........

Cheers

Awesome shots Casper. Well done.........and TRS04 as well. Not bad for old, out of date and (soon to be unsupported) software.

Something i must try with TS2010's layers. How one route changes over many decades, birth, maturity & death. Thanks for the inspiration

Thanks for the nice comments folks.

For a moment I thought you were going to say, ''..old, out of date.. Trainzer". Quite reasonable if you had!;)

I reckon on plenty of mutual support from others here in the forum, as always. Lets hope the future remains rosy from that point of view. I'm sure it will!

Paul. Good luck with the layers idea in TS2010. I hadn’t thought of doing more than two. Good idea.

If you try it, a good way to view it is by running the screenshots in a loop through your image viewing software - using a fine dissolve transition.

To get the best effect, you need to be sure that all of the "immovable" bits of the scene, like the roadway, bridge pillars, cottage (pre extension!) etc. don't move between shots. It’s imperative that the camera position also remains "locked" in the same position, otherwise it looks awful.

It will only work with a fixed camera in Driver.

Then save your first created chosen "era". Immediately save it again as a new Route which can then be edited to remove/add the new objects to your additional era/s.

The camera angle will then be the same in both/all shots. (BTW, you also need to place a train on track within camera range for this to work in any shot with “no train”. Mine is buried under the right bridge support!)

 Great stuff, many thanks.

Richard Beeching - wasn't he appointed by Transport Minister Ernest Marple whose family firm was involved in...road building?!

Paul

wow,and don't forget the numbers of steam engines being scrapped prior to the takeover and the abandonment of some unprofitable lines which was claimed by Beeching himself!

Don't lie here Casper.

Do you give your computer drugs?

Either way, it's producing luxurious results. I can only imagine the time taken to recreate (pardon); simulate these scenes.

Cheers,
Joshua

I only do lying down - I'm retired!:p

No need. Auran provided the addictive sim.

I feed it with all of these fantastic assets (lets hear it for the creators:clap:), and just move them around a bit.

Hope to crack my GMax to Trainz transfer problem (winter project) for some of my own creations, then look for the most popular TRS2004 host site to upload them.

It does take a bit of time, but only on the fine detail and viewing angles. The basic stuff is quite quick to do.

Three examples:

Here's a wide view of my B&W shot. Not much there really. Great trees by all of the regular well known contributors. The more recent "greenery" assets are a great find.

The phone box, bike and wall were "improved" by adding Dinorius_Redundicus tree shadows - which can be tilted to partly bury them in the ground for hard shadow lines (thanks Deane!)

And smoke generators are quite creative.
