Good evening everyone.
Yes – almost fifty years have passed since Dr Richard Beeching closed a huge part of the UK rail network in the 1960s.
More than 4,000 miles of railway and 3,000 stations closed in the decade following the report, a reduction of 25 per cent of route miles and 50 per cent of stations. To this day Beeching's name is unfavourably synonymous with mass closure of railways and loss of many local services.
These two screenshots were inspired by a Wiltshire countryside visit yesterday – close to some of my old trainspotting haunts back in those early days. Nice memories.
With apologies to the regular UK builders who may well find errors, and also to all “sworn enemies of Dr Beeching”.
I’m sure the bridge isn’t right, and the telephone box should perhaps be a K2 but here goes anyway (toggle F11 for full screen).
Then and now ........
Cheers
Casper
