The Amesbury Branch - two towns away!

@JimDep Dep you might want to take a look at this one.

Amesbury is a small city located about 8 miles from where I live. Haverhill and Amesbury used to be next to each other until the 1880s when the town of Merrimac was incorporated. There's a road located a few miles north of me called Amesbury Line Rd which actually follows the town line bordering Merrimac today.

Amesbury made carriages and lots of them and later trolley cars and early automobiles. At one point Henry Ford considered building his first Ford plant here because of the expertise in carriage manufacturing, but he didn't due to logistics. Amesbury is too far from the steel making upper Midwest and off any mainline railroad needed to transport raw materials and finished goods. Now, if Amesbury was connected to the B&M mainline and was made a through route from Plaistow, or Newton, that may have made a difference.

I've incorporated Amesbury into my Enfield and Eastern. In addition to following the Eastern Railroad branch as is, I ran another line via a tunnel to another connection on the other side of a large hill. Using a bit of modeler's license, this additional line looks as if it was always there.

When carriages, trolleys, and early automobiles became obsolete, so did Amesbury. Service ended in 1972 and the branch lasted until 1980.
