Terminus station problems

I know it's probably impossible to build an underground station like Union in Chicago. So I am attempting to make a standard terminus station, but the platforms are way to short. I made a "super Chief" consist and most of the cars are sticking out form the end of the station. Even if I spline a platform it extends the length of the base block. the longest platform (non spline) I have found is only 100 m.

the other issue I have is does the train back into these stations or pull in and then back out. in either case where is the turnaround?

Hi Empire-Builder,
What I usually do in a Terminus station is "navigate to the station, Terminate Passenger Train, Uncouplez, Wait for trigger (trigger name). Then have a shunter couple to the rear of the train and drive to a trackmark, the said trackmark should have a trigger close to it which will trigger the original loco to back out and go to an engine shed or a turntable.

Cheers,

There are much longer stations available on the DLS. I use the VSR-series by Bloodnok. Here's a few of them. There are many more plus some that are built-in as well.

<kuid2:60850:22031:2> Station Platforms 04 230m VSR
<kuid2:60850:22005:3> Station Platforms 03 140m Staggered Curved VSR
<kuid2:60850:22014:3> Station Platforms 05 230m VSR

Even with single or double platforms, they can be butted together to create a much bigger interactive station. They will be individual "stations", but they can be named to something like.

Eastside Terminal Trk 1 - 4, when referencing a 4-track station. Placing another one down becomes Eastside Terminal Trk. 5 - 8, etc.

I did this on an ancient route and it works quite well. You can use these high-platform stations, which would be typical of a big city terminus anyway, and add in details such as platform roofs, benches, waiting rooms, and anything else you might want to.

Most (all?) commuter railroads terminating at Union Station Chicago are push-pull with a locomotive at one end and a cab car at the other end. Amtrak is different but exactly where they turn around is unknown to me.

It is entirely possible to build a underground station by lowering the terrain so that it is below grade using the paste terrain tool. Or you can use digholes. I have done it both ways but lowering terrain is less tricky. Now you have a below grade station. Placing buildings on top makes it a underground station but of course cab mode in driver is the only way you will see it.

Union Station has low level platforms because that is what all the suburban stations use, except for Metra Electric which does not use Union Station.

On a very old route, long gone now because it was back in the TRS2006 days, I had underground stations. I used a cut and cover method by cutting my trench then placing concrete slabs over the top. The upper level was also a multi-track station so there were several platforms above and below in the same location.

Back then, this was a tricky thing to setup because there were no layers to help lock things in place during construction. I spent many hours fiddling and fussing with assets to get them in the right places.
