Taking a trip through memory lane... An original TRS2004 routes found!

Trainzing since 12-2003
Today I was looking through some backup disks for something not related to Trainz, and low and behold I found the version 2.0 and version 3.0 of my Enfield and Eastern route.

Version 2.0 of this route was my save to CDP just before I did my first big expansion and dates back to September 2004, having been started in January 2004 because I got TRS2004 in December 2003. After my initial laugh and chuckle because what I thought was "so realistic" back then, and looked so cool, looks quite hokey to me today. We tend to be our worst critics and I suppose I'm being hard on myself, but yeah the track laying is poor, it floats, road splines are blah, textures are wrong. They're not just bright, and always were, but wrong as in poorly scaled and so on. These things though can be updated and greatly improved with a bit of work.

The Version 3.0 is a nearly total rebuild and expansion, and was done in TRS2006. This version has some great stuff in it too which I like and my track laying is much better, though not as good as it is today. What I really liked here was a riverside line which ran out to a seaport. In TRS2006 through TRS2009 which is when this existed in it's height, you could never see across the river as the terrain would disappear. Now with T:ANE this not-so-distant shore stays in view in all its glory.

With this in mind, I see these old boys as something to use a parts for my current incarnation, which sadly has moved far from the original theme. There are some good parts in here that can be easily improved upon and brought up to my current standards and used for merging.

It was great to find the old routes on disc as it gave me some great memories as I went back to my early Trainz days while building the routes back in the Auran heyday.

I feel like I remember you mentioning that roadname back in the 2006 days. I had a different account then, after 2006 I "forgot" about Trainz for a while but then "rediscovered" it with 2010. It ran poorly and I was about to give up again, then the wonder of TS12 happened, higher FPS and the lot. Now you mentioning that roadname has me remembering those early days of Trainz. I had UTC, 2004, and 2006 before I moved straight to 2010, 2012, and now T:ANE.

That is so cool, I'm happy for you that good ole backup can come into play in more than one way.

For me the most fun thing about Trainz is Merging stuff together, or back in the day, we called it Kit bashing, and if one was so inclined, and had the creativity to make it happen, dare I say necessity is the mother of invention. LOL

Wish you well with your project and I have the greatest confidence everything will come together, only takes time of course.

Thanks for sharing.

That would be about right as the route has been around since TRS2004 days. It's all fictional of course, though it does represent New England's railroad system somewhat and more so now with the newer and better building techniques.

Why don't you contact the helpdesk and merge the account together this way all your Trainz history will be up on the station line next to your current username?

Yes and thank you!

That is what Trainz is all about. The ability to take stuff and either build from scratch and or make something out of something else to create your own personal world. I agree it's a lot like kit bashing but less messy and not prone to as bad mistakes and expense.

I've been looking over the two older versions and planning out which pieces to cut out. I do have some odd data corruption in one of the routes where the trees completely disappear from view, yet they are still selectable in the scenery objects when you use the get asset tool. These are those old baseboard trees, I mean really, really old ones, which looked so great in the old days but don't quite cut it today. The good news is the part of the route I want to keep is intact and I can simply replace the trees I there because I can see them and then start upgrading the route section over all to better standards. My hill construction was a bit pointy and steep back then!

Copy that John, and as for things dispersing, I have found that sometimes when I go to Wire Mode in Surveyor, I found items for whatever reason dropped below ground layer (Gridlines) , and I have successful in deleting them.
