Switch lever, and manuals/info

Hi,

I'm having trouble with switches, was given the advice to add a switch lever. No idea how to do that.

Where can I find everything I need to know about laying track? The PDF manual is just an intro. The online help feature in Surveyor basically doesn't work (I get blank Wiki's), searching forum posts is a little tough, HELP!

Thanks,

-Richard

You can reach the wiki here. As for step by step Surveyor instructions, not sure. There are probably some tutorials laying around, will have to look. Actually, it's pretty intuitive although that's easy to say when you know how it's done. While you're waiting, just try every Surveyor button and see what happens.

Switch levers are automatically added unless you disable that feature. If that is the case, you open the trackside objects tool box and pick and place one. Filter on switch or lever to get a smaller set to select from.

This is the kind of stuff that is making me crazy.

I found #8 turnouts in objects. Used them. In quick drive small green/red arrows show over the lever but clicking on and around them won't change the setting. (How do I get the big red/green arrows hovering over the track? ctrl-H doesn't work on Mac.)

Also, I used the turnouts as described. I want track to match. I get properties on the track it says "inviso". Inviso is invisible track. So, how do I get track that matches those #8 turnouts?

I am clicking all over the place, trying every single tool and option I can find. Fun… but really maddening. martinvk, thanks for the help. I did find that wiki… it has nothing of use for me. There's nothing on track, switches.

Thanks for the reply,

-Richard

it sounds like you are trying to use a fixed track turnout. I don't think these are covered in any manuals as they are essentially 'advanced level' items for trainz made by a 3rd party. Since most of the ones i know of were made somewhat differently, you may have to find the 3rd party that made them and look at their instructions.

I'm just using the stuff that came with Trainz Mac. It shows up under "turnouts" in the Objects list. I haven't downloaded any 3rd party stuff.

That said, is there somebody that sells HO type stuff (#4, #8 turnouts for example) as downloadable content for Trainz Mac?

Those are the advanced switches, the easy way is to use the track and just click 2 tracks together and it will make a switch for you.

Hope that helps.

yes no fault of yours Trainz comes with a lot of 3rd party content already in it probably to go in some of the included routes.

When I said switches or levers, I didn't mean fixed track. As the name implies, their geometry is fixed. Another way to get a junction, turnout (all the same really) is to just join one flex track to the middle of another flex track. A simple junction is automatically created. Depending on your Surveyor settings, the junction lever or visible switch may or may not be automatically added. If not, that is where you have to pick one and add it yourself.

Have a look at the TS2009 manual, page 17. The basic techniques are pretty much the same.

You might also want to look through this thread on Surveyor Tips and Tricks, lots of ideas to try.

THat "click 2 tracks together" is what I was trying to do. I had a tiny track with 2 turnouts that worked. I added one. It wouldn't work… meaning that the tracks connected (made a stub) but in quick drive there was no switch control (red/green arrow). Has anybody else run into this?

Would be nice to be able to use snap track… makes for really clean looking yard ladders and such...

Martinvk, those tutorials and links are perfect. Just read through the one on track and switches. All that info on direction, vertices, is critical.

Also, I fixed my switch lever problem by just toggling the setting in Surveyor settings. Now I know...

Thanks for the links to all that great info...

This is somewhat related...I changed the region of a layout I've been working on to a "World" region for roads where cars drive on the right side of the roads (I'm making a US route). It has a lot cooler vehicles than the built-in US region! But I found that it stopped automatically adding the switches. I don't care since I replace the default with something else anyway, but I was wondering if the auto placement is linked to the region? Or did it (or I) somehow turn the auto placement off?
