I just started trainz last night, and am anxious to begin work on some long routes, Key West would be a nice one. How though do I connect my routes? How do I link one map to the next?
Do you mean merging two maps together or just expanding them? I don't know how to merge but to expand a map just go to terrain mode, open the advanced tab, and click this button. Once you've done that just click on the edge of the map you wish to expand. My personal suggestion is actually to start with small maps just to get a feel for how to build them. My first map was nine map panels big and it was.... well, it took a long time and wasn't the most impressive. However, that doesn't mean the same would be with you. Do what you want, not what i say. Good luck!

mhobuss: The FEC key west extension, or parts of it, may be on the DLS. I do know someone modeled several of the unique bridges along that line.
As far as connecting routes, what routes do you have to connect? If you have maps/routes of several sections of the line saved in Trainz, you can select the "merge "feature from the "options" menu in surveyor. Open a working part of the route you would like to merge with, select "options" in the upper left corner of the screen, then select "merge". A list of available routes will then appear. Select the one you would like to merge with then click the checkmark or OK. Those routes will then appear in a minimap for you to move around as you wish. When you get the placement as you want it, click "OK" and the two will be merged. You must save as a new route or version of the original.
I once lived at MM88 on the FEC Key west extension at Plantation Key on the old roadbed. Plantation Key is just about 3 miles north of Islamorada where the rescue train was lost during the 1935 hurricane along with 500+ souls. I lived in a solid concrete "Red Cross" house built by the Red cross in 1936 to replace homes lost during that awful disaster. I have some pictures and old postcards I can upload to Flickr if you are interested.
Hope this helps, Mike
90 miles?! I've estimated a single map square to be about half a mile in width, so you'd have to make it 180 squares long, if it was just a straight line. I suppose curves though could bring that down. Is the route a straight shot or are there a lot of curves? Good luck on the project.
mhobuss, there is a really good 200+ page User Guide included with Trainz. The section on Surveyor is very comprehensive and the answer to your question, plus the ones you are about to ask are included.
