Looks like the ground texture grid texture used for covering up normal ground textures to me. You'll have to set the direction wheel properly to make it match.

is grid texture available with the other 'paints' like grass etc? .. if it is I have searched them but can never find it .. really useful for creating embankments and slopes at 45* angles when i managed to use it , thanks
It seems that you want to get back to the original grid texture after an area has been textured. Applying any grid texture at random does not help as it does not indicate where the vertex points are.
You have to workable choices.
Firstly, use Erazor2 that if used correctly will remove all textures in all selected areas and leave you with just a correctly aligned grid texture.
Secondly, If all you require is to see where the vertex points are, look for 'Helper Mesh 10' or 'Erazor Mesh' on the DLS. Use either with the direction set to North and Scale set to minimum, and getting the ground forms you want is even easier than with the original plain grid.
I don't know about the others, but let's say I have textured an area and I need to modify it, I usually flip to wireframe view (CTRL+A) to view the grid lines.
