With the advent of TS 2010 and all the future versions, alot of the searches are coming up with lots and lots of threads with dead links, references to items on the DLS that do not exist anymore etc....

You know, the really old stuff.

Now, as the DLS has had or is in a state of cleansing, would it not be possible for threads older than say 2008 to be archived? Somewhere they can be accessed but not available in a general search.

I bring this up as I have been looking for the Class 185 by Nexusdj and Capatin_Scarlet's South Yorkshire route, but all the results point me toward defunct websites and I can't find that South Yorkshire route for love nor money.

Maybe these things aren't available due to compatibility issues, obsolete assets or any other reasons I can't think of.

I just seem to spend a lot of time searching and wading through posts just to end up where I began.

Sorry of it sounds a bit idealistic, but it sure would make life easier if there was a way to quickly tell if a thread was referring to something that isn't available.

Actually you're cruising for a good old-fashioned flaming beat down:hehe:

Not that the majority doesn't agree with you, but it's the highly vocal minority who will tend to ostracize you and label you a "Auran/N3V fan boy" etc.

Making sense in a public forum is always a dangerous proposition:D

Well its not such a bad idea - you will be amazed how alive the place will be when the new version hits the retail outlets, Past trends show that we get a whole flood of people look for assistance for the older version in this case it will be 2010 as retailers will be selling it off super cheap and a whole truck load of new users pop up looking for answers.

What helps is having a lot of on the ball mods to keep the place in check and under control so questions are moved to the right areas and the place not fall intp total bedlam

Bah2 : I'm retired so I can't really afford to run a website especially when the Auran DLS hosts the stuff for free ( I have a FCT so I like to think I'm paying my way) . The skodatrainz website was costing me about £100 a year and it was running close to it's bandwidth limit . The next size up would of cost me £160 a year . FCT = £15.29 !
The problem the authors have is a bit like me, finding time to maintain websites and finding the money to host one professionally. The biggest issue if you go for a professional one is cost. Since Nexus was running close to his bandwidth, upping the bandwidth would of probably cost soo much more (think double as you tend to pay for the bandwidth than space) and before you ask about free websites, theres quite a few problems with them, not just the fact that they are free and they have ads, theres file upload limits, transfer limits, page limits and no FTP access.

Closer to home... this has to change for a start.

I know the guys from N3V have posted this is not a priority... but hey, if a business insists on embarrassing itself by retaining the title of an unsupported version in the DLS URL, whilst pissing off existing and loyal members of the community, so be it... :o
