Street Maps For Layout

Hi all,

I have taken 2 years off and am just starting back using TS2009. I need help selecting the best Street Maps program to use as a guide for my layout. I have looked at Google, Map Quest, MSN and several others but I don't like any of them. By the time you zoom in to get track detail you will be using 100 pounds of paper.

I am starting my layout at 1600 South Canal Street Chicago, IL and intent to work North to Milwaukee, then loop back around to the starting place.

Any suggestions on the best map programs to make this as authentic as possible will be appreciated.

Hi Tom.

I would have thought Google Earth was the answer. No need to waste tonnes of paper, just screenshot the route, join it together with a decent inmaging program and make a baseboard overlay. You can't get much better than Google Earth, it's the real thing.

Try TransDEM 2.0. It lets you download street maps and lets you create UTM Tiles.

Could you provide a link please. I just checked the TransDEM web site and it still has only TransDEM 1.3 available - no mention of 2.0

I'm headed to TransDem to try it out now. I'd bet that right now your layout is in deep snow. Have fun digging out.
