Still having issues 0pening Blue Comet install file

 Hi all, well I've done my clean reinstall of my WindowsXP with all the paches and updates, I just now have a new install of my TS12, and patched to build 49922. So now I was going to install the Blue comet addon in TS12, but when I click on the installer, I get the 'Open With' window asking me what program to use. I've have no idea what program to use to open the the installer. I bought the addon just before Christmas from Simulator Central. I'm wondering that maybe the download messed up somehow, I don't know. Can my fellow Trainzers give me guidance to what I can do to resolve this issue? Yes and I registered the SN# before I installed it to TS12, did I screw up doing that? Thanks, -Robert-

I don't think the serial registration has anything to do with it.

What is the name of the downloaded file? I bought my version some time ago but it was just called "setup.exe" however the Duchess addon was called "duchess_setup.exe". Perhaps your system doesn't like downloading exe files since they can contain viruses etc.

If the downloaded file is a zip file then you need to unzip it.

First, you'll have to go into your folder settings and make sure that file extensions are being shown. Then rename the file to setup.exe or whatever you like. I'd recommend blue_comet_setup.exe should you need to re-install it for any reason.

Now that the file is a proper executable and not just 'setup', it should run when it's double clicked. This is a kown ussue with some internet browsers and the Simulator Central store.

Hope this helps,

Kieran.

Hi paul, it just says BlueComet_installer . what I did was saved the file to the desktop, then try to open it there. do you think that might hav somehing to do with it?

I may be wrong, but i think saving the file to the desktop only creates a shortcut to the real file. The real file is what you want. Because of this, I use regular folders for downloading things, which i open after the download finishes.

So go to where the file really is and try what Paul and I suggested.

Kieran.

Saving a file to the desktop saves the file not a shortcut. A shortcut is obvious by the arrow on the icon. It is common practice to save downloaded files to the desktop so they can easily be seen. Once used they can then be moved to a permanent place for safekeeping.

Oh, ok then. Thank you for correcting me Ken.

Steamrodder, I'm glad it worked and I'm happy to help.

Kieran.

You can save files, even exe files, to the desktop although this is not a good habit IMHO. I have a special folder called downloads and a sub folder within that called "new_downloads".

Kieran is correct. Why don't you move the downloaded file to a folder, say called "Trainz_Downloads" and rename the file to include an exe extension as Kieran suggested. Then try and run the file. If it is not an executable file then Windows will let you know and generally no harm is done.

If the object on the desktop is a shortcut then you can detect this by right clicking on the object and having a look at it. If it is a shortcut then the tab page (at the top) will say shortcut.

Oops - I missed the other posts while eating a taco (dinner).

Enjoy the Blue Comet. Have a look around the dining car. It blew me away when I first saw it.

Cheers
