They do look a little wierd. And I don't even know how they lived and if they lived that long.

to answer your question, not very long.
Turbines were very costly, and very expensive to run.
For Example, the PRR S2 6-8-6, would eat up about a complete tenders load of coal, moving just from the engine-house to the train, a yards length away. also, it was quite a bear on those old things too.
i read a saying once in a book i bought about the steam turbines.
"on a normal locomotive, it takes three minutes to find the problem, three days to fix it. on a turbine, it takes thee days to find the problem, three minutes to fix it."
So, Turbines were Railroad's last try to keep steam live and strong, but the eventual diesel, whom could make just as much power, without the need of all this new-fangled eqiupment, put the big 6-8-6's out of service very quickly.
