Steam Engines stop running

Hi,

I'm still fairly new to Trainz, so this may be a wierd question. I seem to be having trouble keeping my steam engines running, in fact some won't run at all. I have found that the Baldwin 2-8-0s seem to work the best, but last night, after about an hour even the 2-8-0 just decided to stop running. It sits there, with smoke coming out of the stack, but will not move in either direction.

I am running in DCC mode. I have also right clicked on the locomotive and tender and it indicates that there is water and coal available. BTW, when I say some won't run at all, the Baldwin 2-8-2s will maybe move a few feet then quit. Same symptoms.

Any ideas, short of going deisel? Thanks.

Jeese! Sorry, I'm running 2009 build 41844.

Usually when a locomotive refuses to move in DCC mode it is because there is a signal or switch set against it some where. It could also be a another train or piece of rolling stock.

It sounds like the engine specs are (is?) the problem, I will mess around with that some...

Tomurban, I'm not advanced enough to be running other AI vehicles and haven't even started messing with signaling. Looks like I'll have a steep learning curve with those items... haha. Thanks for the quick replies.

Just for the heck of it, use map view mode to scan the track ahead for the aforementioned obstacles. You can change switch direction in map view mode.

I am no expert on steam in Trainz, but have you checked that you have not run out of water or coal?

Under DCC control, as stated in the OP, the conditon of the boiler or tender doesn't matter. You can set the tender to start with 0 fuel and water and the engine spec to 0 starting boiler water and 0 starting steam and set initial and max boiler temps to like 200 deg F so no steam production possible at all. Under DCC (under user control) it's still a speed dial controller and the loco runs just like normal. Under CAB control the same loco doesn't move.

I thought I had responded to this thread a few days ago but I guess I never hit the submit button.

Anyhow since the 2-8-0's ran ok for some time, I would not think that the especs were at fault for those locos. For others that don't run to start with - well yes Ben's locos were setup to run in TRS2006 and with changes in the game since then the max-accel and max-decel tag values have had to change - Auran/N3V have never been known for consistency in that regard. In a few other cases Ben just set them up so that they wouldn't run in DCC mode in any version - I guess he just doesn't like DCC. So those locos need mods to the mentioned tags in the motor containers of the especs.

I don't see why the 2-8-0's would stop running unless you were running under a schedule or using driver commands to run the loco. In which case track obstructions as already mentioned would stop them but if you took over control you should be able to make them move again.

I think it's an enginespec problem, so rweber95 will be able to help you out there. Also, search for other threads on the same topic, and chances are rewber95 has replied with a solution to the problem. I'll do some searching too.

EDIT: Found a link that hopefully will be useful:

Hope this helps!

Kieran.

i agree with you, considering the fact that in DCC mode Ben Neal's 2-8-2's and 2-10-0's and a few others wont move, but in cab mode work fine
i've always wondered what's up with the spec
i just changed it and caled it good

Well, what I did was change the engine spec in CMP to F1 Engine (or something like that) and I haven't had a problem so far... I haven't had a chance to mess with editing scripts. It seems to work for my purposes.
