The distance between the inside edges of the rails of standard gauge track is 1,435 mm (4 ft 8½ in).

Sleeper Dimensions

‘NSW Railway’ 2.45 m 230 mm 115 mm

The rail width and height are not a standard but very by weight, in the US from 20 to 190 pounds per foot.

Per yard actually, so that's roughly... still more. Yeah, we got heavy trains over here.

I seem to remember reading somewhere (years ag) the main corridor (Wash, DC to NY, NY) had some 240 pound rail on it (rail is measured in pounds per yard I believe).

That sounds about right for the NEC rails. You have to remember when built they were hauling some serious traffic, whether in freight or passenger. So, they had to be built to withstand the wear.

I believe Whitepass is correct lbs per foot.

Did anyone ever try to pick up a solid chuck of steel?

Thank big_b, I guess I was wrong lbs/yard but I remember as a kid my Uncle had a piece of rail maybe half foot and I could bearly pick it up.

And yes I have tried picking up track its heavy real heavy!
but.......
have you ever tried to pick up a small piece of a sleeper to put your push bike on so you could test how the wheels ran!

I did and I droped the sleeper on my bear foot and crushed my toe when I was 4 and It Really Really hurt!:hehe:

...Im 13 now much more intelligent then I was I think...

rail width: height 14cm, base width - 13cm, top width - 7cm

sleepers (concrete) height - 22cm, length - 247cm, width - 21.5cm

sleepers (wooden) height 12cm, length - 247cm, width 21.5cm
