SPAD - Don't Let It Happen to You!

I had no clue what "SPAD" stands for, so I looked it up. Since I might not be unique, I'll post it here:

Source.

This used to also be, perhaps it still is, an issue with AI drivers in Trainz, thus I posted this. In real life, I agree this can be applied worldwide and it is a potentially dangerous situation. I can see though how it can happen because of different circumstances such as sunlight in the driver's eyes or braking issues due to wet rails or leaves, and even the distractions.

Just to clarify or be more sure you took my post as I intended: I really had no clue what "spad" ment. My post was not ment as an opinion or a downgrade to your topic or anything; just a copy-paste of a defintion I found on wikipedia. Since I had no clue what it ment and I doubt I am unique, I wanted to save others the search.

To react to your topic:
I know that on the high speed trains, the signals are showing in the cab of the train as they go at such a speed it just becomes impossible to work with conventional signs.

No worries. I never heard about SPADs until I used Trainz and they really didn't happen until TRS2006 when the physics got a bit better.

I agree the in-cab signals are a lifesaver and are used frequently in the USA, but apparently not so elsewhere. I too find this interesting because our trains aren't half as fast as those in other countries.

Spad(ing)?, I was getting ready to fire up the old virus scan :hehe:

Looks like I need to brush up on my terminology once more....

cheers

This sure does sound like a computer virus or email malware.

"Your system has been infected with SPAD! Please run a full malware scan..."

Signals should be in cab, as time of day, and sun can make signals invisible. Untill all RR signals are internal, in the cab, RR's will remain antequated, and at risk of SPAD.

Trackside signals should be abolished, as they are of a low 19th Century technology of the past, and should be outlawed.

You do you know cab signaled trains don't run reds? Operators can ignore them just as easily (and, perhaps, in some ways, moreso, due to complacency) as they can fixed waysides. The Chatsworth disaster being a prime example. Or, equipment failures: Washington Metro had CSS, even ATC and ATO, in the 2009 accident that killed 9 people. Actually, this system also played into a 1996 fatal accident on that same system.
