Southern (CNO&TP) Signals Coming Down.

On my trip to Cattaloochee, I had the chance to ride along side the former Southern mainline between TN52 and Huntsville Tn.
As we passed the old searchlight style signal bridge, I noticed a new Safetran bridge like NS37's sitting along side it.
At this point the Southern bridge is still faithfully guarding the tracks...for now.
It's funny how you never see the ambiance of the old signals until you know they are not going to be there much longer.
I can just picture a trio of F's roaring under this old bridge on their way towards Harriman.
Smoke and grime covered bridge standing along side a shiny new darth vader.

Gradually Norfolk Southern is forever replacing Southern...little by little.

It's tragic

Yeah, well that's progress for you. It's really sad to see the old rituals of railroading disappear right before your eyes:'( . But if it wasn't for that, it wouldn't be as special to see a fast steam engine thundering past at the grade crossing, would it? So, in more ways than one, progress is actually good.:)

Signals are already replaced back here. If only Trains Magazine had that "Changing of the Guard" theme this year. By TVRM, they replaced the signal heads one at a time on the same mast as the old ones. There were 6 heads on two masts, so every week there'd be one less of the old tricolors and a new Vader. So at one point the top two heads were Vaders and the bottom one was a tricolor. Pretty neat stuff.

they are also replacing the SOU signals in my area, with cabinet style signals on one side of the track facing both ways. i hate to see the Southern signals go, but they were badly damaged in hurricane katrina and were modified afterwards with bracing on the sides to prevent them from turning.

The five ACL-era signals on CSX are still standing though, but I consider them "endangered species". I've a feeling by 2012 they will become the modern steel structure similar to NS37's.

Thankfully...The PRR ones still stand on The NEC..but for how long, and I think my area still has a couple PRR signals left

Out here on the Ex-PRR Middle Division we still hae our signals, which makes me happy, but, a few miles away we have the town of Miffilin, which shows a modern signal, how long untill Lewistown is hit?
