Hi Hentis,
I have been thinking about your "re-introduction" to Trainz and wonder if you may be better off starting with TRS2010 instead of TS2012. This has nothing to do with which is the better version but with which may be better for you to start with in learning the changes.
N3V (Auran) have made a lot of changes to the way content is created and also the way it is checked for problems within the program (apart from the DLS checking). Content that has a problem is shown in Content Manager - CM - (part of the program and rather complicated at first) is shown either as faulty or as a warning. Faulty content is marked with a
RED " ! " and basically means there is a major problem. Content that has a warning is shown with a
yellowish " ! " . In many cases Faulty content can be fixed but in some it may need the creator to fix while most warnings can be fixed depending on the users ability and research.
In recent versions of Trainz they have 2 "modes" that you can work in, one is compatibility mode and the other native mode. In compatibility mode content that is "
faulty" may still work while in Native mode it will not. 2010 has both modes which allows you to create a layout in compatibility mode and later check in CM to see if any items are faulty. You can then try to fix the item or find a replacement. You can also check the layout in Native mode to see how everything works. 2012 though only has NATIVE mode and as your learning about the changes to Trainz I think this is worth thinking about in selecting which version to buy.
Another thing you may wish to think about is that in 2010 there is a lot more built-in content to choose from then in 2012. I think the only built-in content in 2012 are the items used in the built-in layouts. Having a greater choice of built-in content may help you in creating your layout/s. When 2012 was released and people realised this and that it meant many great older routes would have missing content, N3V placed all the old built-in items on the DLS but it can only be accessed through 2012. This means if you create a layout in 2010 and use a lot of built-in content, when you transfer the layout to 2012 (or 2014 - whatever :hehe

you can still download the missing "older" built-in content. Again I think this is worth thinking about in your first choice of Trainz.
Hope these thoughts help you.
Craig
