So new...

Hi. I just got Trainz Railwayz a few days ago after waiting two years to get a system to be able to run it. (and have been reading the forums, too).
I've played with some of the scenarios. Now I want to make my own layout (tram, commuter rail).
I don't want to base that on the real world because...well, what fun is that?

My question is how big can a layout be (how many baseboards)?
And what happened to trainztoronto? (Toronto's my hometown and I'm a bit miffed that the site's gone).

Also. Should I build a layout for TRS 2006 or Trainz Classic?
Is it also possible to import buildings I make into the Surveyor? (I have three modelers as well as Gmax).

Sorry for the questions, but I haven't been this interested in a sim like this since FS 2004 and X-Plane...

Welcome !!!

You have found the MOST addictive sim there is.

Layout can be as big as you want, there isnt (to my knowledge) any limit on number of baseboards, so 100-200 is OK.

Build a layout for TRS2006 as that is the common theme in TC too.

Yes you can import your buildings into surveyor as scenery items, so crank up your modellers to full speed !!

There are many helpful fellow Trainzers in this forum, so any Q's post them here.

I don't know what the limit is but it's huge and you're unlikely to ever want to exceed it. Performance issues will almost certainly hit you long before then. It is certainly possible to create a layout with 450 baseboards and probably well in excess of that.

TorontoTrainz (the other way round) ceased operation suddenly a while back. I think I saw somewhere that Tommy is now developing for another trainsim, KRS maybe but I can't be sure.

I think that largely depends on whether the layout will be just for you or for public release. One factor which might influence your decision is that Trainz Classics lacks most of the built-in content that came with TRS2004 and TRS2006.

Yes. I think most people use Gmax for make models for Trainz. You'll need the Trainz add-on for GMax. There are links to some very useful tutorials here if you need them.

Not a problem. Anyone who has Trainz and doesn't have questions isn't running the program :)

Speaking of reading and downloading...I've noticed that a lot of the layouts I've downloaded for both versions of Trainz I have have an irritating problem where dependencies are missing...
Maybe this is a sign I should do my own layouts...?

BTW. Is it better to do a tram/commuter layout for TRS 2006 or Classic? Or is it a matter of choice?

Thanks for the help.

Sadly an extremely common problem. Resolving missing dependencies is a constantly recurring subject for posts on these forums. Somewhere on this forum I think there's a thread with list of layouts known to have all their dependencies on DLS, that would well worth searching for. Or there's (cough, cough) the Razorback where everything you need is on our server :)

If you plan to make the layout available to other people it's a major concern. You would also need to obtain consent from the creators of non-built-in assets (but not if it's just for your own use of course).

TRS2006 has many more built-in assets so I guess that might be best but other people can probably offer you more informed advice.

There is no adequate answer as Trainz is open ended in a sense. How long is a piece of string? If you are doing a tramway or whatever it is up to your own imagination if it's going to be fictititious. Regarding size in particular, I am building a whole city tramway based on something that did exist and up to over 230 boards and still not finished my city of Glasgow.
