Smash Lab TV show on train crashes

Stop that, its just silly
Just watched a show called Smash Lab on the Discovery Channel. Whole show was devoted to the possibility of placing air bags on the front of a locomotive to minimize damage to a vehicle hit.

Used a Geep painted Fillmore & Western #3502.
First had the locomotive with some rolling stock get up to 25mph, cars were seen rocking on the track. It hit the car, measured at 7.4 G's, almost twice the G's experienced during space launch. Showed the front coupler was right where the passenger's body would have been.

About an hour of various tests done for different set-ups for the locomotive air bag device.

They went with 4 large bags on a pivot mounted on the front. Because the bags didn't deflate as planned, the car bounced and was hit a second time. It was then pushed off to one side where an embankment beside the track caused the car to flip. :o Did get the G's down to 4.1.

I saw that to! Everything they tried failed, best thing to keep you safe is,to simply not get stuck on crossings or dont stay on them when you get stuck.:o

I see a major problem with their idea. They Welded the wedge to the front of the engine, no way to couple to other engines or cars.

I'm suprised they didn't test a large ramp like thing that scooped up the car. It could be like a railroad car. Well, who wants to sacrifice their car and a couple grand:hehe:

If we are going to provide for the stupidity of millions of ignorant drivers, we'd might've as well remove all the railroad crossing gates, bells, lights, and signs. This is by far the stupidest, most ridiculous idea I have seen in the railroad industry, why provide for their safety and protection when they aren't supposed to be going over the crossing right before the train does anyways?
