Slight problem

This is/was my windows xp disk. I did a clean reload of windows last night, eveything seemed to be going ok, got windows up and running, then when I ejected the cd this is what I found.

Some bits of the disk were still in the cd drive and some were on the floor. So now I have to try to get another winxp disk. Does anyone know of this happening before? :'( :'( :'(

I really don't know, did it make any weird noises while this was happening? Also, is that the way it came out of the drive, or is it rearranged after an initial panic attack?

First off, no DVD or CD drive has the brute strength to fracture a disk in that manner in normal use. Even breaking it by hand takes a great deal of force. I suspect that someone opened the drive, took the disk out and mangled it, then put the pieces back in. If you have any enemies or someone that has it out for you, I would suspect foul play.

I was only asking to follow up the possibility of a defective disk. I agree with the possibilty of foul play, though. I would take far too many rpm's to shatter a non-defective disk. Also, the disk seems to be mostly upside-down to the way it would have been inserted into the drive. (the shiny side is up)

The only weird noise it made was a bit like a spud gun firing if you know what that is. I can guarantee no one opened the drive or broke the disk by hand, that is exactly as it came out when I opened the drive I was sitting right by the computer all the time. I have heard of disks shattering before but only ending up with cracks not ending up in bits like this one.

Yes, just now I took a CD and tried to break it (no loss, just an old Sports Illustrated demo). I had to fold it half before it would break and it fractured into 3 pieces, two large and one small. What ever happened to that disk it had to have been either broken several times or cut up with a scissors.

No the shiny side is not up, the coloured side is up except some of the coloured label has come off.

And you are positive that no one else had access to your computer? What happens when you try to insert and run another CD?

Hey, I have had this happen before, And it was a lego disk, *Cryes* And i "Blasted my Disk drive to hell and back" It even broke the DVD drive!!

Do not put Anymore disk in Ever, I found i busted it at Super fast speed.

It just came out in 500 more peices :) Your in the clear.

The messing up the drive I can believe, kcdowdy. I watched a show where the tested the upper limits of a cd. (20,000 rpms by the way) When the disk shattered, it just mangled the cd drive cover that they had placed over it.

Well, disks made from Lego rarely stick together. :hehe:

Must have been most of the label, then, because the rest of the pieces are pretty pale in comparison to that one dark one.
I have stripped the drive and cleaned out all the broken bits, reassembled the drive and have used it again, with a disk that is not important, and everything works ok. I can read from and write to a disk with no problems. The bit that puzzzzzzzzzels me is that windows acctually loaded ok and seems to be in good working order.

p.s. if you look at the bit inthe top left of the pic you can see some printing on it.

This happened to me about 9mths ago was playing a game which ran fine the whole time then when I tried to eject it the Drive wouldn't open.Took it to my local tech guy who had to pull the drive apart to see what had happened. The biggest pieces of disk left was just bigger than the some of the smaller pieces shown in the pic.He told me it was not uncommon & was probably due to a manufacturing fault in the disk.he said keep spinning something at that speed with say a hairline crack & something has to give the faster the drive the bigger the bang.

Hi big_b,

Ah so it is not unique then, just wondered. My problem now is trying to get another winxp disk without having to pay for another licence. I don't think Microsoft will come to the party. Do you?

Cheers,

I agree with KCDowdy & big_b.............. I also had a disc disintergrate and it totally destroyed a brand new 52X DVD combo drive. All a disc needs is the slightest fracture combined with the speeds those things are spinning these days and KABOOM!!!!!!

Can you say borrow a disk from someone to install but use your own disk serial number.I have a backups of mine & my Daughters it doesn't see to mind which disk I use Mine my daughters or a backup as long as the serial number is the same as the one I registered with on that PC.
