66' is a pretty odd number huh? (wait a sec, no, its even, hes crazy) well for a boxcar yes :) Been working on it for about an hour. What do you think?

Please be honest, but not brutally honest, do the bars on the top of the car look relatively right? or realistic for that matter?

Thanks.

BTW, when I'm finished, I'll do some cheesy skins in Conrail, BN, and some others.

Thanks. I've realized this will be a time consuming project considering it will all be extruded and not photo scanned. (Extruded means pushed outward/inward)

There are two ways you could make it less time consuming: 1) make one roof panel, and copy or mirror it (I don't know Sketchup, and am using these as concepts, not program commands); and 2) shorten the car a bit, as in US practice, a 60 foot boxcars are fairly common, while 66 foot boxcars are a bit unusual.

1: A) Yes, I did Copy and Paste most of the roof panels.

2: B) It would be fairly easy to shorten the car.

Ripples on front completed.

Here I have completed the ripples on the Front of the Boxcar. :)

I also Shortened the car to a length that works for me, it came out to be 58' long.

Nothing wrong with Sketch-Up...

8) You done good SFRR!

Don't be afraid to go ahead and establish yourself in gmax!

Tutorials exist, the best come from Passion3D...working gmax in .dvx format, and can be viewed with Windows Media Player.

Consider gmax, the Mother of all Game Content Creation Software!

And don't forget the Trainz Asset Creation Studio.

Just finished the ladder and what ever that pipe is for on the fron fact of the boxcar, followed by a picture...

How does it look?

Thanks
Mike

Though I've never tried Sketchup and I don't remember exactly what this boxcar looks like, the modeling side of it looks fine to me!

Will this be used in Trainz or is it just to see how good you can make it?
Except for an extreme closeup, that roof detail should be done with texture and some bump mapping, otherwise, way too many polys for the effect. Remember that that there will be many other objects in the scene, all needing attention from the CPU and graphics card. The more polys in this one car, the less there will be time and resources for everything else.
