im building a uk layout and i need to know how far apart uk colour aspects signals should be?

secondly what dose 2 aspect signal mean?
and 3 aspect
4 aspect

thanks

depending on the line speed is the main bit about signal spacing plus the length+weight of the consists.
2 aspect, red+green only.
3 aspect, red,yellow,green.
4 aspect, red, yellow, double yellow, green. the single yellow also flashes.

I thought distance between signals must be a minimum of train length of the longest train allowed on the track, added to brake distance needed when passing first signal at line speed. But I'm no expert really. :)

Distance between signals is decided by the type of code track being used. Older lines used a steady energy loop and signals were about 1 mile apart and would be staggered with a West Facing | East Facing | West Facing | East Facing signals.

Newer signal systems use Genrakode 2 control units made by Alstom that will allow max of 29,000 feet between locations if circuit is all weld rail and has good ballast of 10 ohms DC or less.

Not all locations have signal heads; we also use repeaters normal referred to as cut sections. These locations have the same units and relay other signal location, but just take the code and retransmit it to the next signal location.

Also may want to check out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Railway_signal
