Hi there trainzers.

Was running TANE for a while and lost a mountain of work due to hardware failure and it knocked the stuffing out of me.

Took a break before i decided to have another go at it on another computer......once again i lost months of work due to my own carelessness.

Now have a better machine and feel like i want to start all over again as the game is so good and i miss it.

The question is should i stick with TANE (which i enjoyed immensely) or go for trz 2019.

Since you already enjoyed TANE immensely why not wait for a Free 30 day Trial offer of TRS19 and then give it a go? I think the trials are fairly common. Or perhaps wait for a super sale. If nothing else you might try a Silver/Gold subscription for a month. That way you could also checkout any Payware routes you may be interested in. If not happy just cancel after the first month and return to TANE. You will have at least learned about some Payware you may like.

If you read the forums you'll see that some people love TRS-19 and some people have issues. Add to that, there is TRS-19 Standard Edition (before Unified Driver) and TRS-19 "Platinum" with UDS. Again, some like UDS, some prefer the previous standard edition.

Some of us have few problems. I think a lot of issues stem from people on "Plus" who want to have the latest beta releases. There are those who don't do backups and they don't maintain a main stable install for their route building, etc. Then when the beta causes problems and breaks things (as they will) they are unhappy.

Personally, I have a Standard install, and then three platinum (plus) installs. SP2, SP3 and then a separate beta.

If you get on a stable release, and stay there, your chances are liking TRS19 are good I think. It just takes some getting used to.

There is an issue with the lighting for UK layouts with TS19 but on the positive side it does support pbr textures and wrings a bit more performance out of the hardware.

Cheerio John

As John has said the environmental lighting for Uk layouts can be a bit of a trial to setup with TRS19 and takes a lot of experimenting to get right. After being a long time user of TS2012 I did a brief hop past TANE and went to the original release of TS2019 and have since worked my way up through the various 'upgrades' and patches released by N3V. I still have an SP1 basic version of TS2019 installed as well as SP3 Platinum. I have a Plus+ subscription, but I stay completely out of anything to do with beta versions. I've tried UDS, and the idea basically works but I think it's too easy to lose your work through making mistakes with saves.
TRS19 isn't perfect. I've spent far too much time repairing assets that TS2019/TRS19 has broken to be a starry eyed fangirl about it, but it can be made to work well and in general the way the game engine performs is better than what has gone before. I will say this though, - back up everything. Immediately after working on a route save it without fail. I back up both to the cloud and to a local hard drive that's not the same one Trainz is running on. I have copies of all my Trainz installs going back to TC3 on external hard drives.

My only thought is if you like making routes or sessions, with TANE you can go forward, with TRS2019 like all other versions you can't go backward.

There's no reason why you can't keep TANE and also install and run TRS19. I do that so I can build, test, and repair older content as well as move stuff forward into "19 if I want. TRS19 is my main platform and while it has its moments, I mean what Trainz version doesn't, it can behave nicely too. I was in Surveyor for close to 7 hours yesterday without crashes as I jumped between various routes and sessions, as I cloned, setup iportals, and did a bunch of stuff.

As Greg pointed out, having a well maintained database is not a recommendation; it's absolutely required. This goes a long way for all Trainz versions in ensuring a reliable operation and is mandatory if you are planning on importing content from one version to another.

Thanks for all the comments, much appreciated.

I do like building my own routes.....that's where i get the most enjoyment from the game.

Taking everything into account i'm going to leave TRS19 alone for the moment and reinstall TANE.

Thanks again.

And BACK UP your work to CDPs and even save copies to an external drive so you don't loose your work. That can be so frustrating as you know. Route building if done well (and not in 2 days!) is a massive amount of work, but certainly well worth the effort in the end.
