Hi all,

I am interested in buying Trainz, but I don't know what version to get. What version do you guys recommend? 2006 or 2009?

BTW, if I do get 2009 can I use that Disney Monorail map (from 2006)?

Get 2006, It's By FAR the Most Stable of all the Versions. 2009 is Chock FULL of Bugs, and 2004 is Too Old. Don't Even Bother with the Classics Versions... ;)

What the difference between the Classic Versions and 2006?
Read around in the forums....there is lots of info on the different versions....you will find pros and cons on all of them and will soon discover that you will have to decide which to buy...not us....

All versions have their pros and cons. I have every version up to 2009, but I prefer working in 2006 until 2009 is more stable. 2009 has some features that are very nice, but I wouldn't buy it again until it is out of beta...

Depends on the size of your wallet. If you can afford too, I'd recommend you get TRS2006, TC3 & TRS2009 WBE.
I'm sure you will enjoy all three versions...
If you are a "typical always broke student", and can only afford to get one version, then I'd recommend you get 09 WBE. (that & EE is where the future of Trainz lies)...
Cheers, Mac...

I bought TS2009 as my first time with the Trainz series and personally I have not had one crash, or issue with the program, either in surveyor or driver all have worked fine. Maybe I am just lucky or something with no hassles with it, but I am quite enjoying it alot. I have begun remodeling an old HO setup I had as a child into surveyor and I am having a ball with it.

All in all, as others have said, in the end it is you that has too choose. But with all the info I have read I would stick with either 2006 or 2009

Cheers

TC3 definitly has what I feel is the best game engine as far as steam and signalling go. The drawback of the Trainz Classics series is the lack of built-in content which limits what you can get working when downloading items that require built-in content from earlier versions. To get the TC series to work effectively with a lot of downloaded content you will have to purchase 2006 as well so you can import the built-in content.

2009 has all the built-in content but has problems with alpha textures but content is starting to come on line that will put this problem out of the lime light so to speak. 09 is a new product and will take a bit time to get "acceptable" amounts of "native" content.

In compatablity mode, I really see no difference between 06 and 09. So you may want to consider 09 over 06. As mentioned though, read all the info in all sections of the forum before you make any decisions.

2009 for sure

dont waste time or money on 2006 if you are running Windows Vista. 06 is a big pain in the butt.

TS09 runs well under Vista without all the admin nonsense required to run 06.

09 is your best bet.

cheers:)

You decide...

 Minimum Requirements for TRS2006
Go to the Product Info/Product Info page & scroll to the bottom to match your computer specs.
TS2009 will take you to the FAQ page.

well, i had to ask myself that question a few weeks ago, and i decided on 2009WBE.

I dont, lets say, regret it, but you should know there is not much you can do with it at the moment. Yes, you have all the earlier content, but most of it has problems (the often mentioned alpha channel bug and others).
You will spend a lot of time sorting out content that works and that "somehow works", making content yourself got much harder if you are not used to the new stuff (normal maps and such).

If you just want to work with existing routes and content, i would say you should go with an older version and safe yourself time and trouble. Nearly everything you ever download from the DLS is compatible with 2006.

If you want to build routes/content, counting in how much time it usually takes to build anything, i would go with 2009, because the 5m grid is really nice for routes, and the grafics wont want you to go back, ever. Yes, you spent a lot of time to learn the new stuff, but the quality will be higher then ever before.

Just my opinion

I like TC3 but there again I'm into UK items and TC3 has a very good selection. You need to buy TRS2006 as well to get the built in content but the TC3 game engine is actually the one that works well, better performance and more reliable than the TRS2006 game engine.

TRS2009 shows promise so for North American interests it might be the one to buy.

In any event the different versions aren't that expensive compared to a loco or even a bit of rolling stock on a model railway.

Cheerio John
