Serious accident; Snaefell Mountain Railway

On the 30th March, 2016, there was a serious incident on the Snaefell Mountain Railway, Isle of Man. Miraculously, given the circumstances, no-one was hurt or killed.
Recently refurbished tram No.3 was parked at Summit station in high winds, when it began to run away. Due to the gradient, the car accelerated quickly and derailed at a sharp corner, when it apparently rolled on to it's roof before disintegrating. Unfortunately, I do not exaggerate as the tram looks like a total write-off. Again, it must be stressed, it is nothing short of miraculous that nobody was on the car, or that the car didn't derail and proceeded to crash at the often-busy Laxey terminus at the bottom.

That is short of a miracle no one was killed in that!

It's hard to believe that was once a tram.

Is anything salvageable in that pile of rubble?

John

It's been reported today that enough bits of no. 3 are intact enough to allow the tram to be (extensively) rebuilt...

Ah, its nothing the local fixer upper can't put to rights in no time. couple of days, look like new. :hehe:

Bill.

Very fortunate no one was hurt, but looking at what the tram has been reduced to, one has to wonder if similar fleet members can be considered as being crashworthy by modern standards? If it had been loaded, little to no survivability at that speed or even a lower speed impact.
