This is my senior year and for my senior project I want to create a steam locomotive for trainz can anyone help me by being my mentor and to please tell me the software and process to do this. Anyone open to the idea please respond.

If this is for a project and not necessarily for the users of Trainz i would say the easiest programme for creating a detailed loco is Sketchup. But this creates far too many polys and we dont all have amazing computers, so if you feel like being nice use blender. There are better programmes, some free, that may be easier to work with or better for creating locos, but im not an expert on them so i dont know what to suggest. If you aren't very good at 3d designing i recommend trying blender first.

AFAIK there's no real, reliable way to get anything from Sketchup into Blender. Converting to other formats hasn't worked out from what I've tried and read.

Actually with Sketchup 8 you can export a file as DAE and import it into Blender. But the model i did this with was fairly simple, and it is very hard to scale.

More to the point a steam engine normally takes over a year to make so if it has to get finished you may not make it in time, someone did a box car for school.
