Railroads are a powerful symbol of timelessness. They bring with them progress and prosperity, and even after they're long gone their legacies often live on, defining the land- or cityscape around them. This week's theme is Right of Way. At Madrid, IA, BNSF 2318, crosses over the road and continues on toward Boone, IA. At a crossing, trains receive the right of way... I wonder why... maybe because trains are just awesome that way??

The morning run of a westbound mixed freight has the right of way on the Wolf Hill and Western Main Line, and all switches are set.

The railway was squeezed onto an excavated ledge betwen the mountain and the town. The ledge will remain forever even if the line gets closed. A permanent way

Dual Right of Way on the Ffestiniog

Normally Right of Way issues between rail and road are resolved by bridges or level crossings. As here on the Ffestiniog (heritage) Railway (in North Wales) road-running sometimes become necessary. This modern level crossing is not only really long due to the road running, but also seems oddly out of place with a steam train rolling over it.
