Screenshot Horror!

Paulsw2

Ambling on the slow line
I'm having a rather strange problem - when I take screenshots of my layouts in TC3, the resulting TGA, when opened in Irfanview, shows all the ground textures 'blackened' out though the textures on all the models such as buildings, track, rolling stock etc. seem fine.

I should emphasise that this is a problem in the screenshot - in-game all the ground textures appear to render perfectly.

This problem manifests for screenshots taken in DirectX and OpenGL, it appears to make no difference.

I've checked my graphics drivers and they appear to be up to date.

I'm in Windows 7 64 bit, if that makes any difference.

I wonder what can be going on?

Here's some screens to show the problem:

(1) Black snow!

(2) Black grass!

Has anyone seen this before?

Paul

Nope... I certainly haven't seen it before.
But me personally, for both RailWorks and trains, I use a handy little method:
Open up paint.
Open Trainz or RailWorks
Load session/route
Go to screen location
Ctrl+Alt+PrtScrn
Pause
Go into paint
Ctrl+V
Save
Go back to game
Unpause
Take next screeny Ctrl+Alt+PrtScrn
Go into paint
Ctrl+A
Ctrl+V
And so on...

NB:
Ctrl+V is paste....
Ctrl+A is select all.

I suggest Fraps for this. The reason being is that you can have Fraps send the screenies directly to a folder in your pictures without having to go to Auran and program files to retrieve them. The texture issues will be fixed. And it is FREE, along with free 30 second videos, which also go to an easily accessible folder in your videos.

Alternatively, you could do it the simplest way which doesn't require any additional programs by using Print Screen and pasting it into Paint. You can then save them as a .jpg file.

:)

I just like Fraps since it took less than a minute to install. It doesn't stuff screenies into a file where you have to go through all of the program files and such to get them... It puts them directly into a folder of your choice, and you don't have to save them or alter them in any way for them to look good. Hit a button, as many times as you want, look in "My Pictures", and there they are. Plus you can see what kind of frame rates you get etc. I'm a computer moron, and Fraps is easy. Free easy stuff. I like it.

Edit: You ever eat one of those balut eggs?

If you still wish to use IrfanView because of all the additional advantages you don't get with FRAPS. please read this tutorial which I recently wrote for you folk:

TUTORIAL < < <

It's on another site of mine because it will also appeal to a much wider audience.

IrfanView offers the following advantages over FRAPS:
  • Totally free, no restrictions of any kind.
  • Very small program footprint
  • Uses virtually no memory
  • Can also crop, resize, convert file types, modify colours, sharpen plus heaps more.
  • Can be used for much more than taking the odd screenshot. Learn new skills!
  • Much smaller file sizes for Internet or email use.
  • You nominate the folder.
  • 20 million people use it.
  • Heaps of tutorials including mine.

I use Irfanview for many other things. I did not know you could make screen shots with it. Or do you still use PRT SC, then modify them with Irfanview?

Crikey, Motorbreath, all you have to do is click the link called TUTORIAL <<<
above any you may actually be surprised.

I can't offer you more than that. Sorry.

BTW I haven't got the faintest idea what PRT SC means.

BTW, BTW means By The Way.

Hey, it was a simple question. I don't need that since I have a 1 button screenshot set up any way. We were both giving suggestions to someone, and your answer to the simple question could have been shorter than your above response and would have required less of your precious time. I would not have imagined there was a key on the computer that slipped by you after all these years either.

Example: Yes, you do have to modify the pics with Irfanview to see the textures properly with this method.

Example: No, you do not have to modify the pics with Irfanview to see the textures properly with this method.

Ah, Now I understand. PRT SC means PRinT SCreen, and it's a key on your keyboard. A bit like this one I guess!

Motorhead, maybe not all keyboards are the same, and also I prefer to use the English language. it's just a personal thing, but one shared by millions.

Had you taken 5 seconds to read the tutorial that took me several hours to write, your question would have been answered in Step 3. Then it would have been unnecessary for you to ask a question, which I duly answered, which you then rebuffed.

Maybe I was wrong, but I saw your question as being in response to my post, considering it was immediately under my post and written 20 minutes later:

"I use Irfanview for many other things. I did not know you could make screen shots with it. Or do you still use PRT SC, then modify them with Irfanview?"

Sorry, it must be my poor English again, but I didn't read it as:

"We were both giving suggestions to someone."

The question was hardly a suggestion.

The question was hardly a suggestion.

First, if you are referring to my abbreviation of "print screen" in your statement about your preference to use the English language, that is what most keyboards made after 1997 have on them.

Read your own post BY THE WAY, where you included the teenage girl abbreviation of "BTW".

Also, if you did actually read anything, you would know my forum name is Motorbreath, not Motorhead. Being a huge Motorhead fan, I'll take that one as a compliment.

You know very well that I did not mean my question to be a suggestion, since I'm sure you also read the rest of the thread, therefore it should have been very clear when and where I was offering suggestions.

You masquerade as someone offering help, but all you really want is self gratification, typical of the narcissist. I usually steer clear of any threads that contain posts by you for this very reason. Ooooo... beware of the forum bully. Ha!

So before I get banned for saying any more to you, let's just join each others' ignore lists, and you can go back to your directory and try to make it less useless.

Oh, and Paul, sorry your thread turned into this. Hopefully between myself and Mr. Congeniality, you found the information you needed.

Right...

That's a bombshell. So, I'll try to get back on track.

What better about FRAPS is that I can do a picture/video "session". I don't have to enter Trainz, save the Print Screen shot (Or as my modern keyboard slurs it: "Prt Scr"), but instead, take multiple pictures and videos without exiting Trainz once! As stated, you do have to tell it where to save everything, but setting that up is nothing compared to the time you save by using it alone. I'd personally enjoy buying the full version just to be able to record long videos. A long train can't always pass in 30 seconds! ;) However, it's bearable. The pictures and videos bloom and if anything, emphasize my shots. Oh yes, just be sure to disable the overlay thing with the Frames Per Second. "FPS".

Cheers,
Joshua

Sorry chaps you've had a bit of 'handbags' about this.

I should have said that Irfanview worked fine with TC3 on my previous PC and it's only now, on the new one, that I've got a problem. I'll try FRAPS as it's a useful control to show whether it's an Irfanview issue with TC3 or a wider, perhaps Windows 7, issue with TC3 on my setup.

No problems in TS10 though! ;)

Paul

Well I've taken pics in FRAPS (which are saved as .bmp in the free version) and they look fine! I've noticed that the version of irfanview I'm using is the latest from 2009. I wonder if they changed something compared to earlier versions?
