hi
i have tried both Gadwin ScreenRecorder (64-Bit) and Gadwin ScreenRecorder (32-Bit)

for a 13 minute recording, they save a wmv file of 1.3 gig

i cannot find anywhere to downsize it

is there anything else out there that will let me do this without using so much memory space?

thanks
ron

Screen recorders are known for creating large files just like any other video creation tools. Short of lowering the quality of the video or the resulting resolution, there's not a lot you can do.

You will need to check the settings of the recorder program you are using. Unfortunately, I'm not going to be able to be much help with that as I haven't used that particular program.

Hi Ron - A bit of a catch 22 with regard to video. It makes sense that these recording progs will try to save your video to the highest level possible. Reducing the level will give you video but you might not be too happy with the end result. If you use Nvidia graphics then you can always download Shadowplay and use that but again it will create big files. They will all do that by default. There are progs that will convert your video to a smaller size by using MPEG but to do this it will use compression so once again you are looking at some picture quality loss.

I am not sure what you are trying to video but you could always use an editor with transitions and edit out the boring bits which will make the video shorter, thus reducing the file size. This would give you something like a video of your express train going from A to B but from one trackside camera to the next and missing out the tunnel bits. Just an example. (an afterthought).... Using a video editing prog will allow you to add a music track or your own audio track.

Hope that explains it a bit better for you
Regards
Doug

You could use a video converter program to take the 1.3GB wmv file and transcode it (convert it) to another more efficient format e.g mp4

WinFF - you could try one of the presets for a start,
Convert to: MPEG- 4, Preset: MPEG-4 720p

I've seen people recommend Handbrake aswell, though have not tried it myself yet.

This is an area that I am interested in trying out. I just downloaded, installed and ran Shadowplay only to discover that Trainz is not one of the games it supports for screen recording (unless I am doing something wrong - always a possibility). I then tried Debut by NCH software (another free offering), all I got was a few seconds recording of the desktop, not the Trainz screen.

Who is using screen capture software successfully with Trainz and what are they using?

I made a short test video using shadowplay. I was running trainz in full screen. and just recorded a few minutes to see if it worked and what the quality was like. It is very good but as I stated in my other post, as per it is hungry and you will get large files.

Try Bandicam. It is a free or paid program depending what you want. It will record in Mpeg-1, motion jpeg, Xvid, YV12, or RGB24.

It also seems to make TS12 run smoother on my machine. The only limit in the free version is 30min. max length.

hi people
thanks for all the suggestions and help
with gadwin screenrecorder, either 64 or 32 bits, it used 1.3 bib
with debut i only got an accelerated 2 minutes of desktop , not the game
with bandi cam, it stopped after 10 minutes and used 588 meg with an avi format

i cant get into my box account, or i would have uploaded it to show you.
keeps telling me the password is wrong
i got in, but it won't let me upload 588 meg. wants me to upgrade for big dollars
is there any other online storage around??

ok. what i did is built the fassifern branch railway line from ipswich to dugandan
it was closed in 1964 and the rails pulled up not long after

this recording is supposed to go to the libraries and also the state museum and archives as a piece of lost history
therefore it should be in its entirety, so the people can see what once was

the station area of ipswich video

size: 588 MB AVI File (.avi)

this is the station area of Ipswich

the first steam train in is the Boonah local which took 3 hours to get there at 7am
next comes the red Mt. Edwards railmotor
the sydney mail is next,
then the Brisbane mail from Wallangarra comes onto the station
after that we see the new siulver 2000 class railmotor leave on its jouerney to Boonah - Dugandan

See if you can find MediaGo, it's a PlayStation program for the PSP which I use to convert FRAPS videos, at max res a 30GB file becomes about 2GB as MP4, in your case a 1.3GB file would be about 80MB.

Cheers.

Hi Ron -

If you search youtube with "philskene" you will see quite a few of my Trainz videos.

They were all recorded using FRAPS (the full paid version). For a 5 minute video the file size is generally well over 5 GB.

To upload to youtube I compress the file to about 500 - 800 MB using a free application called VirtualDub. I've tired most and found that VirtualDub is reasonably fast and reasonably easy to configure. And, yes, it will do basic editing too. Best of all - it's free.

hi all
azervich
using media go i could only get it down to 1.02 gb
how do you use theis to get the size down?
i must be doing something wrong

phillscene
using fraps it comes in at 570 meg in avi
i haven't tried to convert it as yet this morning
running out of time
finally managed to get virtual dub just now

will update you all later

thanks for the help
ron

Ron,

The .avi format is huge by nature, meaning not very compressed. If you can convert the video from .avi to .mpg you will see a substantial size difference.

Outside of the free utilities, you might want to look at Camtasia, or Pinnacle Studio. Either of these can convert the files and both offer some nice editing tools and effects such as wipes, titling, audio synchronization from outside sources for use with music and voice overs, among other things.

thank you john

philscene

i got virtul dub into the games machine, but i have no idea how to convert the file

i read their help screen 3 times, but am still no wiser
nowhere in there was anything to do with how you get it working

i must be having a dumb day today
sorry

Ron --

I had a similar problem when I first started using VirtualDub. These are the notes I made from various help sites:
_______________

VirtualDub

File/Open
Video/Full processing mode
Video/Compression
Choose codec = Xvid MPEG-4 Codec
Configure (unrestricted)
Single pass
300 (say - maybe make larger to increase file size and definition)
Audio/Full processing mode
Audio/Compression = MPEG Layer-3
File/Save as AVI

__________

For HD videos:

File/Open
Video/Full processing mode
Video/Compression
Choose codec = Xvid MPEG-4 Codec
Configure DivX 1080HD -- more = H.263
Single pass
20000 (maximize to increase file size and definition)
Audio/Full processing mode
Audio/Compression = MPEG Layer-3
File/Save as AVI

__________

Video Splitting:

1. Load an AVI file by clicking the File | Open video file menu command or simply drag and drop it onto the VirtualDub's window.
2. Go to Video menu and check the Direct stream copy copy option.
3. Go to Audio menu and check the Direct stream copy copy option.
4. Go to the frame you want to start from
5. Click the Edit | Set selection start menu command.
6. Go to the frame you want to end
7. Click the Edit | Set selection end menu command (your selected part will now turn blue at the bar)
8. Click the File | Save as AVI menu command to save the AVI segment.

__________

Video joining:

Select Video/Direct stream copy.
Select Audio/Direct stream copy.
Open first video file.
File/Append AVI segment.
Select second video file.
Repeat with all video files.
Save as AVI and save the whole video.

I'm not sure what video codex you might have installed on your PC. It depends what other video player applications you may have installed. I use "Xvid MPEG-4 Codec". If you want to use it but don't have it, go here:

http://www.codecguide.com/index.html

Download and install the Standard of Full pack.
