What does this do to memory use/speed-does it improve speed on a laptop?

Try it for your self. To get quantitative data, use FRAPS to see the frame rates. Most laptops can't run Trainz very well, no matter what you do. You need an high end graphics card which laptops seem to lack.

I went from 15FPS to 30-40FPS switching to window mode with 09. Of course those are my routes. Anything built in is hopeless, never getting above 10FPS with Tidewater. I only use compatibility.

Can't hurt to try it, you can always switch back.
