Rod Stewart's NYC and PRR HO layout

I've just finished reading an article in the latest issue of Model Railroader magazine about Rod Stewart's NYC and PRR HO layout that he has been working on for the last 12 years. He has had some help from a few people (but who hasn't) and, of course, money is no object, but his attention to detail and obvious passion for railroading is inspiring. Highly recommended reading.

P.S. He works on it in his hotel room (err..suite) in between gigs...probably to keep out of trouble...:D

That thing is HUGE. Half the layout width just for staging. Clearly for passenger running and scenery.

What makes it look so good (besides the attention to detail) is the ratio between scenery and track. In the real world there are 1000's of times more scenery then track. His ratio may not be that high but its obvious he has a lot more scenery then track. Most model RR'ers (myself included) have ratios around 1 to 1, lol.

...a fifteen mile mainline...

8) Yes, the feature, found in the December 2007 issue of Model Railroader Magazine, is wonderful!

Way back in the early eighties, I visited Chester Holley's hobby shop in Tampa, Florida, and Chet showed me a picture, and asked me if I knew who the chap in the photo with him was...it was Rod Stewart, who previously had an appearance in St. Petersburg, and regularly visited Chet, to add to Rods O scale brass collection.

Evidently, Rod sold out his O scale brass...

Yo backyard:

I used to be in a model railroad club with Chester Holly. His shop was right next to the line to Port Tampa. One Phosphate train per hour. He passed away a some years ago and his daughter Dianne took over. Not many folks know this but he was one of the foremost antique and toy train collectors in the world. Every wall in his house was floor to ceiling shelves with beautiful trains on them.

Did you meet William J Lenoir? He was one of the premier O scale custom loco builders. He was in the club too (the boomers). Had a master model railroader in it too (Louis Curry).

I hear the buildings are huge. John Allen scale. Towering towers. I'd like to run to his house and see it myself.

Yeah...I live about 45 minutes away from his pad in Beverly Hills. I was kinda hoping he would invite me over to play. :D
