Roads for train trolleys

Hey all,

I was wondering if you guys knew of any good roads for a light rail trolley route? I'm planning on building a light rail / trolley that runs through a city. I need a couple of things...

1. Is there any road with double tracks in the middle of them? For example, cars travel one way on one side of the road, the double tracks go in the middle of the median, and the cars go the opposite direction on the other side of the median. Anything like that on the DLS?

2. Do you guys have any advice for construction of a trolley / light rail route?

Keep in mind, I'm using train trolleys, not bus trolleys. A good example of a train trolley I'm trying to use is this...

I'm using TRS 2006 / Trainz Railwayz version.

If you are interested in building your own route you might search the internet for the New Orleans Streetcar. The cars run on double tracks down the center of St Charles Ave. The streetcars are on the DLS.

I have built the line but it is not on the DLS.

If you don't mind not having actual road vehicles running and moving along your tram/trolley routes's streets, in Surveyor you could simply lay any normal rail track spline down first as normal, then lay the 'No Traffic Road' spline that comes with TRS 2004 (I'm not sure if it comes with 2006 though), down on both sides of the tramway.

For sections where the tram line runs into streets from it's own reserved right-of-way, you could simply lay the road spline directly onto the track and lower or raise the road spline's height (requiring much trial and error to get it looking right).

I know it's not exactly what you're looking for but it's a simple way of getting 'the look' of a tramway/light rail line when you don't have actual tramway compnents to work with.

Incidentally, I presume you could probably hack any road spline's Config file so that traffic will flow in only one direction if you want road vehicles to use your streets when using the above method, but I have no idea how this could be done, if at all.

Hmm. I have a few more questions.

1. Is there any good suggestions for trolley stations on the DLS? Right now I'm using built-in default platform stations that came with my Trainz CDs. I'm placing two of these stations for each stop- the stations only have one track so I have to mirror the stations for both tracks.

2. I heard there's one-way avenues somewhere on the DLS. Was it made by Andi or something? Maybe I could lay down twins of these avenues with the train tracks between these two avenues?

3. Should I use "Signs Xing USA" (with railroad crossing lights and booms) for the street crossings? I can't find any street crossings with traffic lights. The only decent default crossing I can find besides the "Signs Xing USA" is the one with no signals or booms, but it doesn't have a median line crossing it.

4. Where can I find the Charles Street (New Orleans) tracks for download? I can't find them on the DLS.

I'm trying to create a fictional MBTA Green Line route in my city. I'm going to have an urban trolley / subway line in the "terminus" city at the end of my main route (commuter rail / Amtrak / freight route).

There are no special track for the New Orleans streetcar line. I used the MB_rail_only_track (kuid 35412:38051) from the DLS. These can be placed directly over streets or as in the case for New Orleans they can be placed in the neutral ground between the two lanes of traffic. By adjusting the height of the rails they can be made to look very nice.

TRACTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, Veristek

If you do a search on the download station for tram and track, you find several choice from UK to European to USA.

Overhead lines exist as well....look for the creator Jaleel if your doing street running. He's incorporated overhead and track in a prototypical US fashion.

If you need more info, just ask here or I chat be found in #trainz chat room.

Have fun.

Cosey built a set of 30 meter Tram Stops, single and double, including a nice curved one. Just do a search for the title "tram stop" and it pops right up. It's a TRS04 asset.
Another 04 asset is Iceman2117's TramStop series and his Tram Station set. These are more ornate than Cosey's and look very nice in a more upscale downtown setting.
Cosey also did a Tram Depot, where you can park and service your trolleys. Iceman2117's depot is a lot larger.
And for fun, Dreddman did a Pub_Tramstop where your passengers can have a beer while they wait for the next trolley to arrive.

Check out Andi06's web site for his "AJS" range of goodies for trams and roads. Or search for "AJS" on the DLS.. There's lots there.. NormP's Surfside Trams (on the DLS) is an example of how all this works.

Have fun

Thanks for the suggestion, guys. I'll give it all a try!

I need to know more about one way streets and good crossings of the tram ROW. The ones in Boston are typically one lane with medians, and they usually have traffic lights. Anything like that here?

Speaking of traffic lights, does any roads on the DLS or elsewhere have traffic lights (either animated or not) at 4 way intersections?

I would endorse the Andi06 items. they have grooved tram track with overhead wores built in and variations with cobbles. I nearly finished a large system that existed here in Glasgow until 1962 and would never have been as it is without Andy's sets of street track.

What are the KUID's or title names of these Andi stuff?

If you look at his site or do a search for him on the DLS the whole range of street track is available both just grooved track with overhead wires built in as well as cobbled surfaces. The track poles when you use the for double track can sometime click slightly off to one side. All you do there is click on it and it will jump to where it should be. When doing turnouts at junctions you should use the 2mm track length so you get a smooth bend because the longer track goes out of kilter. If you don't find the links let me know.
