Reskinning a brick building

Thai1On

Slave to my route
I love Dave Snows paper mill but the problem it's just to new looking for my route. I would like to reskin it into an aged brick building but I'm not sure how to do it. I pretty good at photoshopping most things but I've never tried or know how to apply a brick texture.

I would love to hear how other people do it?

Dave

It depends on whether it is a tiled texture - ie. a 'small' one stretched to cover each of the walls of the building - or a larger texture map which includes individual images of each wall. As I am not familiar with this model, I don't know!

For a tiled texture, simply replace the original with the one of your choice making it exactly the same size and giving it exactly the same name. If there are individual walls in one big texture, then you will have to paste your own brick image over the original, avoiding windows etc. - and making sure the bricks look realistic. (This is the more difficult option, in my opinion.)

Please remember that I make these suggestions on the assumption that you intend the resulting model for your own use only and not for distribution (copyright).

Are you planning on reskinning all seven buildings? I shudder to think of how many tiny little doors and windows are involved. First, I would select all the items in each map and then copy, and paste each one as a new image. Then fill in the original maps with your brick texture, deforming if need be to match the size of the bricks in the original texture. Then copy your selections and paste them back where they belong. If you did not select an area to use as a guide when reapplying then you're in trouble. If there's a night mode then you have copy the maps, select all on the night mode maps and paste into the selection.

Thanks for the help everyone. One of my students showed me an interesting filter in Photoshop and I'm going to give it a try.

I'll post the results.

OK, please that a look and tell me what you think.

Is this reskin worthy of a DLS upload?

I would say so. Well done!

Seeing the number great reskins you've done that is a inspiring complement! Thank you.

I think the brick layers union may be getting upset with me and all these buildings that need to be built :hehe:. Here is another one.

I do have a question though. The size of the file after reskinning is rather large, 53 megs for this building . How can I reduce the file size? Both buildings are being uploaded now.

What is the size of the original asset? You can only reduce the file size by reducing the size of the texture files. You're doing well, but the image sizes you've posted here are too large for this forum. You may want to reduce the size to 800 x 600, change the images to links, or ask a mod...I'm sorry...THE mod...to move this thread to the screenshots forum.

Keep going, you'll have a full set before you know it!

Thanks for the advise Euphod.

ATTENTION MODERATOR can the thread please be moved to the appropriate forum, please;).

Agreed, Ed...... I think he's got the reskinning bug! Good job!

It's a demanding mistress. We need a good core of solid reskinners to support the route builders and multiply the gifted talent of the modelers. It's true I'd like to make my own models, but now is not the time. Perhaps when I retire.

Wow, thank you for the kind words. I will try and improve as I learn more. Necessity is the mother of invention or reskinning. My route's timeline is set in the 30's-40's so I need a lot of brick factories.

I'm lucky to have some talented students in Photoshop as they taught Ol' Teacher Dave a few very handy tricks.

I will take Euphod's advise and open a new thread in the freeware section.

I would also like to thank Dave Snow for his great content and his kindness for allowing me to reskin them.

Okay, but the limit in freeware is 800 x 600, which is why I suggested screenshots.

800x600 is good enough to get the point across, though. Mine tend to be 800x500 after rescaling the widescreen aspect ratio anyhow.
