Replace Assets tool is great!

I just used the Replace Assets Tool in TS2009 for the first time to replace one type of track with a different one.
I was afraid that this process would take a very long time due to the size of my route, but it was instantaneous (I did not have the 'section only' button active).

What a great tool this is! Saves so much time, and works so nicely.
And to think I was going to go through my entire route, replacing this track manually!

It's one of the shining points of 2009, I'll agree with you there. Too bad the rest of the program is not as shiny.

"Replace assets" sounds great but, how the bleep do you get it to work?!
I open a layout in surveyor and open the "replace assets" window. So how do I tell it what to replace and with what? Those windows are grayed out so I cannot enter anything. I would like to replace track.

Hello SuperFudd,

With that window open, find the item you want to replace in the "add items part tool" on the right of the screen (where you select track, scenery and so on) and drag that into the "Replace Asset" window tool.
Then, find the type you want to change to, and drag that into the replace with part of that "replace Asset" tool.

Note, it will not work on any item that has attached tracks in any form, including double track, Industries, most bridges and similar

I hope this might be of some help?

Best of luck

Linda

Asset Tool

Hi fwasser: I too ran across this Asset Tool one day and followed through with it like you did. I found it to be very fasinating.

It is indeed a great tool, but beware of trying to replace ground textures!

It's apparently a known bug that if you try to change a texture throughout the ENTIRE map, it often causes the program to crash. It does, however, seem to work if you do one baseboard at a time.

Hopefully this can be repaired in the next patch.

Its a good tool.

But, be careful !

1. If you use "Trigger Multiple Signal" rule, or anything similar, do not "replace" signals used by these rules. The "named" signal used for any "signal rule" will disappear and the signals won't work anymore as you set it up for these rule. The new "replaced" signal defaults back to "no name".

2. If you want to replace "junction lever", watch out.
- The "rotation" of the junction will revert back to the default. In most cases this is not desirable. It might get fixed for SP2.
- The junction name will be replaced with a default numbered junction. If you use "junction rules" or "junction control" objects that depend on "junction name" the rules/object will stop working after using "replace object" command.

3. The "height" of the replaced objects seems to default to the ground height of the object location. i.e. Trees that are partially buried will be replaced with the new one at ground level. This may be fixed in SP2.

4. When replacing very large instances, such as texture. Due to the large number the computer will "act" like it crashed by freezing up. But it really has not crashed. Sometimes it takes more than half an hour to complete the task. The worst part about replacing texture is, any "blended textures" will lose its blend. The replaced texture will make the blend to look like "patchwork quilt".

A few things worth remembering about "replace asset" feature.

WHAT!!! you mean i did not have to spend all day deleating are re laying all that road and crappy track....DANG i could have saved 8+hrs and tons of crashes....

Is there anyway of using this tool as a 'delete' tool? By that Imean, can assets be replaced with nothing?

Russell

I've had this idea quite some time back, either in the form of the tool implementing it or a "nothing" asset. Nobody responded.

Nicholas.

With all due respect, I'd becareful about using this tool because it could pose problems when creating a route, but still it is a great tool to use!

Hi,

The best way to do this is to delete the asset in CMP then enter your route and click 'delete missing assets'

Cheers, John

Now, why didn't I think of that? Sometimes can't see the wood for the trees.
Many thanks John for a great tip.

Thanks John. Great lateral thinking!

The only problem I can see with that is: if the asset is deleted it is not available for future use unless it is downloaded again.

But your advice is most valuable and I'll use it.

Russell

Slightly more troublesome but saves the trouble of redownloading:

Clone asset, replace original with cloned, delete cloned asset, remove missing asset from route.

Still, you can't delete builtin assets..

Cheerio,
Nicholas.

Hi,

Built in assets are slightly more complex.
Open up CMP - disable the built-in asset to get rid of - then open that asset for editing.

Open up Windows Explorer - find the open asset in the 2006 editing file - cut and paste the asset folder to My Documents and then delete the folder. (It does not work if you try and delete the folder directly from the editing file)

Re-0pen CMP and then start up trainz from CMP.

Load up the route - every instance of that asset will have disappeared - then click "Delete Missing Assets" and save.

Tidy up CMP by using the "revert" option on the asset.

Regards, John
