Renaming Assets

My rolling stock list is becoming unwieldy! Can I rename my assets in CM2 and CMP? How do I do this? Open for edit and...?

How does CMP/CM2 figure out if an asset is already in the database? Does it calculate it by KUID or by asset name?

Cheers!

Hi Rougespear,

CMP checks the kuids first, it will throw up an error or a warning if you have two or more items with the same kuid number.

To reorganise items, first decide on your naming convention, i.e. are you going to list them be railroad, by type or by name. Then you will have to open each item's config file and change the username tag, some items will have name tag as well, I would change both. While you are doing this there are many items showing warnings, the yellow exclamation mark, many of them state something like an icon is obsolete so while changing the name you could delete the reference to the icon in the config file as well. If the warning says PM files can not be veryfied in CCP or Paintshed items are obsolete just ignore it.

Hope this helps,
Bill69.

ps. don't forget to save, close and commit

Editing 1000s of config.txt files is a real task! A method I'm trying in TS2009, that doesn't require editing the config file, is to use CM2 to assign rating values to rolling stock (which can be done with a right mouse click on a kuid). For example 0 stars for hoppers, 1 star for boxcars, 2 for flat cars, 3 for tank cars, etc. I'm only rating cars that I like and use a lot. Then in Surveyor, I can use the Content Search Filter to narrow selections using the rating option.

Interesting use of the rating system there Bob. I never really looked into it and you have given me a great idea. Thank you very much for this insight.

My Most Stupidest Lamebrained Idear' So Far ...

Ever download 127 roads, and they are all named with wierd unrelated names, spread out all over your asset lists in surveyor.

Ever download @ 1000 of the fantastic RGCX railcars, but you find that they too are all spread out all over creation, and they are all non decernable from all the rest of the conglomeration of other low quality and paintshed railcars ?

I open all my favorite assets, and in the config file username line, I insert the prefix, copy & Pasted text: Test

Now I can search: Test , and locate all my favorite assets

Example: "Washenlaunge" becomes: "Test Washenlaunge"
Example: RGCX's ... "High Cube PRR" ... becomes "RGCX High Cube PRR"

All my jointed rail assets have JR in front of the asset name.
To do this, in cm click on the asset, in the asset details box to the left simply type JR in front of the original name.
Same with any asset to ease finding.

Cascade, this threads from 2009. Where did you dig it up from, 200ft below ground ?

Rather than start a brand new schtoopid thread, named: My Most Stupidest Lamebrained Idear' So Far ...

I searched a related thread and bumped it.

Why create a new thread ?

Bumping extremely old dead threads is perfectly OK ... if you have pertainent useful information.

Which is a great idea of yours: to rename all JR, USLW, RRMods ... etc ... with thier prefix

Example: "Sporbust ES44 BN" or "SB ES44BN"
Or RRMods "RRM GP30 PRR"

Ancient thread maybe, but editing the username tag has been a perennial problem with Trainz.

You can often make light work of this tedious job by using a rule-based text editor to run through a bunch of open-for-edit assets and apply the same rule to them all with just one click. The rule might be something such as replace username " with username "CSX_ (in other words, this inserts CSX_ as the first letters in each asset's name). It will do this for 1000 assets as easily as it does it on 1 asset.

CM will never have this ability. I asked for it years ago and got a definite 'no'. Too much potential to do damage apparently. In effect, N3V like the 'idear' of everyone plodding through each asset one by one to edit names.

You can do this using a simple-to-use third-party tool called "Search and Replace Master".

http://knowlesys.com/software/search-and-replace-master/

Simply open the bunch of assets up for edit.
Set the parameters for what you want to change.
And click on the OK button.

I used this to fix a bunch of broken assets that had a spelling error in the config.txt files.

Now with renaming assets, can't you just rename them in Content Manager asset preview window? I've been doing this all along and it saves a lot of time instead of opening and closing each asset.

There are a few suitable search-and-replace editors out there, and some are freeware. I use a different one to you, but the concept is certainly the same.

Only one at a time I think, so the problems of doing a large batch within Trainz remain.

@ Fran1

That is a great tip... never knew that..

Just tried it out..and is saving me loads of time with not having to open item for editing ... searching through config file for username and having to commit it again

Thanks for sharing

And it saves them going faulty on you by not having to open them for edit.
